Spark Plug dramas

There has been a funny smell coming out of the exhaust so had a look at the spark plugs to see if it was running rich. Instead of a black carbon deposit, I find a strange rusty brown deposit. Mechanic tells me that the plugs are overheated. So I might try a colder plug.
The plugs were NGK Iridiums and had been used for about 15,000Km. I always thought Iridiums were long life but after some reading on the Denso website, only OEM Iridiums are long life. I assume this is somehow the same with NGK
Standard plugs - approximately 20,000km Platinum plugs - approximately 80,000 - 100,000km Iridium Power high performance plugs - approximately 15,000 - 20,000km Iridium Original Equipment long-life plugs - approximately 150,000km
What is surprising is that the NGK Iridiums costed about $16.80 each!
