i hate to say it but a rusty brown colour sounds preety close to perfect

if they are black they are not cumbusting fuel properly ie a rich ratio and carbon deposits are forming if they are white there is too much heat ie lean. if you can look in the back of a haynes repair manual it gives a spark plug chart telling you what the colours mean
