The warning light works on a seperate circuit, that's why there's 3 wires going to the tank. But if the light comes on, even if there's a bit left in the tank, fill the bloody thing! Besides, how does it solve the problem of rediculous fuel prices if you run the tank out? You gotta pay eventually anyway... Oh, and a new pump costs more than the $3 extra petrol you might scrounge from the tank...
