if you cant be stuffed buying a multimeter - just buy a cheap dodgy $2 test light from any hardware/electronics/auto store.
As far as the battery stratch/POP test goes - i myself use a 12V cordless drill battery, and inspect the movement of the speaker when i apply the 12V. If the speaker moves "outwards" then you have the speaker polarity correct.
Another thing to note is - with some mid 80's toyota's, there was some use of "common negative" for speakers. If you find this is the case, then you MUST rewire all the speakers to avoid damaging any aftermarket head unit you might use.
Also - dont forget to solder AND electrical tape ALL connections. You should be able to find the earth wire in the wires there, but if not just use a nice healthy chassis point.
