You mean you've only been able to download at 6kB a sec? The 56k rating is in bits, and there are 8 bits to a byte.
So theoretically the maximum speed you could get something on a 256kb connection is 32kB a second. Thats the difference
Plus, with ADSL you WILL connect at 256kb, where as with a modem it can vary.
