From my understanding, Two. Only two cylinders are in each cycle though. So for all cylinders to have their go, 4. Goes for if it's a 6,8,10,12, or whatever as well. At any one time, half of the cylinders are intaking and compressing, and half are igniting and exhausting.
One crank turn for the intake/compression, then another one for the ignition/exhaust.
The amount of valves just dictates how much space opens for fuel/air and then exhaust.
On your 16v twincam, 4 per cylinder, two are intaking, and two exhausting.
