FWIW my 18R-GU originally came with factory Solex's, and I later converted to factory EFI, so I have experience with both. I can't think of a single thing the carbs did better than EFI, except perhaps for the fantastic induction noise you get with sidedraughts. Having said that, the car still has a pretty good induction growl with EFI!
