No Camry in Australia came with a 3SGE. Only in Japan, the Camry 2000GT was the one with 1st series 3SGE which had the same output as the ST162 Celicas that came out here. It had strut bars similar to the AE92 which went to the firewall, pollen filters, variable TEMS and had a digital dash to name a few but overall, it looked similar to the 2VZ-FE Camry that came here. Also in Japan, only the 1VZ-FE was sold as opposed to the 2VZ sold elsewhere in the world. Don't go for the 2VZ-FE as they are starting to get a bit long in the tooth and repairs are expensive.
Just be careful of the worn valve seals but it shouldn't affect the running. My 3SFE I had before (it's one of those pics with the ST183 alloys at the top of the forums before I sold it) had problems with pinging and carbon build up as well as leaky O-rings. Other than that, it was going very well. Just do a compression test on both the cylinders and cooling system before buying them. Other than that, the rest is bulletproof. I was averaging 9-10L/100km and does 600km on a tank (60L) in the city without trying at all. Really great for a 2L engine.
I think for the price and the reason why you want one of these cars is great. Safer than a Corolla of the similar age, large enough to take 2 more people to the snowfields with skis and still have room for luggage is damn good I think.
However, powerup options are far and few in between. if you can handle that, then I don't think there is anything else you can get that can give you what the Camry can.
Cruise control you'll only get on the Ultima and V6 models and A/C is optional on everything below the Ultima and V6 (i.e. CSX, CS Limited, CSi, CS, Exec, SE)
