Hey guys,
Is the diff centre on an ae71 directly interchangable with any other stronger centre??? The aus spec ae86 for example??
Thanks

ae71 has a T series which is a 6.7 inch crownwheel, aust spec ae86 has a S series diff (and smaller housing) with a 6.3 inch crownwheel. it is not stronger by anymeans.
I suggest u either look at getting an LSD in a T series or upgrade diff housing (f or G series)

Erm, NO!
AE71 has a BORG WARNER diff. I know this cos i thought the same until i looked under the car. Having just ripped mine out and reading "BORG WARNER" on the top of it also gave it away.
It's a complete piece of noisy poopy shit. Being an aussie assembled car, the laws back then made Toyota use locally produced shit.
You can direct bolt in an AE86 diff, but i went for the TE72 gearbox diff and tailshaft, which already had the swaybar mounts on it.

Thanks for that guys...
I'll put another question to you then...
What is the best diff to put in taking into consideration
1- cost
2- performance
3- ease of conversion
4- availability
thanks for your help

TE72. Nothing else.
But you will also need the gearbox and tailshaft from the same car.
All up that cost me a huge...... $200.

Considering the car in question has a 4A-GZE, something stronger than a T series might be in order. I recently acquired a Corona MkII rear end for my Celica, which has an F series diff. It's heaps stronger and LSD centres are much easier to find. The only real downside is it's a bit wider (about 40mm I think).

the width of the AE71 stock diff is aroun 1410mm anyway, so using the MX23 diff will be almost a PERFECT WIDTH!! Like i said in my first post, you would need to get your original mounted welded onto the F series MX23 diff, and then sort out somthing with the tailshaft....
Norbie, just to put poo on you.... from his four requirement, my suggestion of the TE72 T series fulfils three! so

A T series might be OK if you're gentle with it, but what's the point of having power if you don't flog your car every now and then? If you put in a stronger diff that's one less thing to worry about. Plus an LSD will be a major bonus if you want to be able to get your power to the ground!

getting power to the ground is good
so the te72 is ruled out (no offence witzl )
is the Corona MkII a reasonable option?? LSD isn't a must, but it is preferable... what do people put into sprinters and other KExx gze conversions??
In case you haven't already realised, i don't know much about diffs

Corona MkII diff:
Pros
- Relatively cheap
- Close to the right width (no need to shorten)
- Same stud pattern
- Easy to get LSD centre
- F series centre is HEAPS stronger than a T series centre (the F diff in my Supra has survived a 400hp 2JZ for about 3 months)
Cons
- Heavier than a T diff (can have negative implications for handling)
- Drum brakes (big ones though)
- Suspension pickup points must be cut and welded to suit your car
