Or take it intact to a GOOD diff place and let them take it for a hammer. A good mechanic should be able to tell you after a quick drive.
And then consider, if they can't tell the difference while specifically looking for it, will you notice the difference while driving??
Hen
PS, yes it does all depend on the diff specialist, so that's why I said a GOOD one.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but is there any way to tell if a diff centre is lsd and NOT welded without opening it up?

Drive in a circle with full lock applied. If it doesn't shudder, chirp and hop (or snap an axle), then it's an LSD.

maybe yours has been tightened...
there is only one realistic way to check without opening it up.
jack up one rear wheel. car in neutral.
try and spin the wheel by hand. if you can, it's not a locker.
if you have an excessively(nice) tight LSD, such as Garth, Simon and my self do, then you may possibly need to get a socket onto a wheel nut, and rotate with a ratchet/breaker bar in a clockwise direction to get it to 'break' LSD torque.
you can also tell from doing this at the torque setting your LSD 'breaks' at, ie. 'goes open' by using a torque wrench to do this.

Well, I dunno man, but with only a small amount of throttle but letting the clutch out reasonably quickly, mine acts like a locker too and locks up damn toit too....
Yours may shudder and chirp and hop, but compared to a welded diff, it's smooth as!
Steve's method of jacking up one side certainly sounds like a very good way to check tho.

sorry I didn't explain myself properly. I meant when looking at a diff thats not on the car.
I don't think i'll make the same mistake twice by not taking out the centre before i buy it but i got my money back anyhow.

if it aint full of molten metal...it aint a locker.
(unless it's a spool, but doubtful.)

Detroit locker will not be full of molten metal - and will still be a true locking centre (not locked but locking) so to an air locker.
Sorry to be a pedant.

A detroit locker is not a spool. They are completely different.
A detroit (or air or spring locker) allows for free wheeling (IE open) when it is disengaged, but when it is engaged it will turn both tyres at the same speed and nothing (aside from backing off) will let it free wheel.
A mini spool locks the axles together making them turn at the same pace all the time (like welding) and a full spool completely replaces the hemisphere and its associated side gears etc.
