You should read all the tech articles on www.club4ag.com
The term "japspec" can be confusing, so try not to use it if you have other descriptions. In Japan the AE86 cam in various forms, including 3A motor and non-tilt steering. So "japspec" could mean many things.
You are refering to the diff and rear axles from a APEX, GTV or GT spec AE86? This is a T series rear end, 6.7" ring gear. There is a important difference in the latter update models (from late 85 I think?) were the rear axles are bigger in diameter and use a different spline into the diff center. If you use the early (zenki) LSD center you can put this into most T series axle housing. Such as most Celicas, some Coronas, and T-18. All the axles have the same spline but often have different lengths so I am no sure if you can use a RA40 axle in a T18 housing.
If you have the late AE86 model LSD center, you also need the bigger axles from the same model which are not normaly avaliable in Australia, they need to come from Japan also. Or from USA where they had 86-87 model Corolla GTS.

Something to also note is if you are using a factory or TRD LSD you will need to shorten the axles a little bit for them to fit properly.

After looking at the axles. It appears Will has the ZENKI JDM (disc rear end). So the question now is, what axles fit?
T18 possibly, since T18 axles line up with ZENKI aftermarket LSDs..?

Yeah, T18s will fit fine on a Zenki diff.

Yes you can, you have to fit them with the larger bearings, and possibly machine a small amount off the collar where the bearing sits.
I have seen them used many times in JDM diffs as the JDM diffs have larger bearings, and snapping axles is reasonably common in racing. Two of the axles ive seen have not needed to be machined down, but three have. No idea why the difference. All came out of junkyard T18s.

If T18 axles can be used (which I can cast no light on) then you can use RA60, RT132 and probably RA40 axles all with 10mm trimmed off them.

Well, Ive been to a couple of places and they tell me that i need to get the same one as i had and a celica specialist said nothing from a celica would match it... So i guess there goes the ra40 idea...
guess it would be simpler to get one made up from scratch?!?!?
cost... bucket loads but beats waiting for parts from overseas i guess...
Yay!!!!!

I have at least 1 of each of these diffs/axles sitting here. There is nothing I have found to mate CORRECTLY with the late spec factory Levin LSD. the involute spline cut into the diff gears is unique to that model as best I can tell. the closest we got was an early 80's liteace axle which is the correct diameter, but has 1 exta spline. If some has found it, they are onto a winner. please let me know so I can get a spare axle for 1 of my cars!!!!!!!!!!!!.

You think it would be possible to get em resplined to suit??
Its a pretty beefy lookin axle compared to the aussie ones and the bearing is pretty monstrous... the lite ace axle is the right diameter at the hub end???

I believe AE86Boy has an early model zenki 23 spline axle from a Japanese ae86.
The axle is pretty beefy as mentioned, and has the weird rounded flange that differentiates from the S/T series rectangular piece that bolts onto the actual diff housing
help us poor ae86 bastards!~

How long do you think it would take to source one or pair to suit from japan?? I would be better of trying to get a billet set made up??

JDM Kouki(later model) Spline is unique and u wont find a equiavlent one to fit
JDM Zenki (early model) Spline is identical to t18 and should be rather easy to source.
It IS possible you may have a kouki LSD by the sounds of things. have you measured the spline? i think its 23mm zenki and 24mm kouki.
BTW dont bother getting a set from japan. they will take ages and they WILL be shagged
maybe try USA? maybe their kouki GT-S corollas have the same diff?

this is the axle in question, definately 23 spline, definately zenki, and definately no local places have it.

Our main question is, is there anything else, any other local car that have the same flange, bearing size and splines?

I think you had better get some T-18 axles. Yes I know the bearing is different. Press the bearings off both. Have a good look. I'm sure there is a way. Maybe something has to be machined a bit?

true, but the T18 axles look very week compared to these ones - they taper down about 4 times with the huge bearings !

T18 and Zenki 86 axles are the same length, use the same splines, but as has been said, use a different bearing.
you can't use an 86 bearing on a T18 axle, the metal isn't there to support the extra width.
you 'could' use T18 axles with the 86's seal and locking flange, and a T18 bearing, and then put that into an 86 T series housing. you would also have to get the T18 axle's hub machined down to fit inside the 86 disc though,as they're a few mm bigger.
I have two JDM complete rear housings here, and a T18's axles and centre, and they look to be interchangeable, more or less.
if you're worried about the weakness of T18 axles, you could always have them taper ground and polished. the reduces a LOT of potential failure risks.

You can get big or small axles from Fensport in the UK but the postage will make your eyes water. I brought a big one back in my hand luggage once. Should have seen the look on the faces of the security guys when it went thru the X ray scanner.

You can put the bearing on, but it needs the axle to be machined. I checked back with the diff/axle place that i used to use in Canberra.
I had a look at a T18 axle and it has a slight step in it between where the bearing is placed and where the collar/seal is. The bearing locator is about 1-2mm thicker than the collar. But the larger T-series AE86 bearing is the same ID as the collar/seal section. I.e. you have to machine down the thicker section to be the same as the collar.

here is a good pic that shows this:

jap axle on the left and T series on the right.
So in order to fit the larger bearing, we would need to machine the T series thicker section of the taper ?

Yep, im pretty sure thats what we did. Just get out some verniers and measure it up, once you have a bearing and a t18 axle itll all become very obvious.
While you have the bearings off you can change over the clamp/squish/backing plate over as well if you wish.

It's looking even less worthwhile to buy a t-seriers disc brake diff these days. Not only do they demand a ridiculous premium but when you break an axle you're f**ked.

Almost being the key word. Not everyone has access to the required machinery.
Plus there is the huge preimum you pay for the diff in the first place.

Well by that same token not everyone has the required machinery to change the bearings either. Any good diff shop will be able to machine the axles down for buckleys,
