ta22 celica-2t waterpump whirring/howling noise??

hey my engine bay makes a whirring/howling sound sometimes.
only sometimes, its heaps random, just starts and stops everynow and then and sometimes it gets rythym.
me and my dad are pretty sure its the waterpump, more specifically the shaft might be worn.
we're pretty sure its not any of the belts, we've tried tighting them.
do you guys think we're right? has anyone dealt with this b4? or has any technical or stepbystep info on replacing it? we're probably gonna get a new waterpump from REPCO soon to replace it....
any help would appreciated....

Hi,
To help pin-point the source of the noise, use a long screwdriver and place the metal end on the engine and place your ear to the handle of the screwdriver.
When you get to the area which is making the noise it gets transmitted through the driver and you'll hear it loud and clear.
That's an old trick my mechanic (sadly now deceased - which shows how long I've had the car!) taught me.
Move the screwdriver to various parts of the engine to find the noise. It's the best method for finding the exact tappet that's making some noise, and also for pinpointing bad bearings.
Of course, be safe and keep the driver away from moving objects or you may have to go to the hospital to get a screwdriver extracted from your ear!

hey thanks for the advice, i tried it and it sounded like the noise is coming from the waterpump or alternator,
i could hear the noise from both, probably a bit louder from the waterpump....but then it stopped so i can't be 100% sure
any ideas anyone???

to be safe, replace the bearing in the alternator. if it is shagged and eats away at the shaft, you'll be up for another alternator...
there is only one bearing (the rear is a sleeve) and should be cheap as... check it is bad by feeling for roughness when the shaft is turned (with alternator dissasembled of course)
that is easier than doing the wpump, but if noise is still there, at least you have new alternator bearing

With the belt off, grab the waterpump and have a good feel, should be able to tell if it's not quite happy in the bearings, and if the seals are shot, it'll likely be dribbling.

When aftermarket 18R water pumps get dry bearings they squeal VERY loudly at higher revs. They don't really grumble much tough, only scream.
I reckon I'd follow oldcorollas' suggestion and look at the alternator first.

thanks for the help guys
pity i didn't read the info bout the alternator earlier cos
i already got a new waterpump ($55 from super cheap auto)
i'll check both the alternator and water pump when i take them apart/off and probably replace the waterpump anyway if the alternator is the screwed bit.
i'll keep ya posted but keep posting help for me guys.
