G'Day modders
I'm having to rebuild my 18R with 18RG head from scratch. I have two of each but the head's are slightly different (as written above). Just wandering if there's any major differences and if so any thing i should watch out for.
Cheers for any help, Pomey!

I would trust the strength of an 88270 head more than an 88250.
I've seen three cracked 88253 heads, which look structurally quite similar to the 88250 head. I've never heared of a cracked 88270 head.
88270 ports are suposed to be better flowing too.
This post is mainly rumors. I've never owned an 88250 head to compare it to my 88270 heads.

Cheers guys,
Thanx for replying. Like most novices (so i've heard) at the mo i not interested in heaps of power, just more than the 18RC provides so the strength of the two heads isn't really of concern. Although with time, more power is apparently irresisitable!
I've got a set of webers so they should be fine for the 88250. I would prefer to use 88250 as it's 'brand new', still in a box, but listening to ur advice, later on i'll invest some dosh in the 88270. I still got the rest of the car to worry about too!
Cheers, Pomey!

The strength issue that I raised with the heads was not related to power, but to their tendancy to crack when tightened.
I reckon the older, bridge style heads may have a weakness along a casting line that cracks if they are over torqued.
After seeing a few cracked bridge versions, I reckon over torquing must be fairly common. Probably people use the SOHC specs for the DOHC head.
That means too many people trusting the ACL gasket specs!

Hi Steve
I have the Toyota workshop manual for the 18RC & G (otherwise referred to as the 'Green Bible'). Just wandering if the torque values listed in there are the correct one's to use? If not could u fill me in on what values i should use to avoid this cracking u speak of. It's got me i lttle on edge!
Cheers, Pomey

Yeah i'll take note of that.
I don't have new head bolts and don't know where to get them either. I bought everything i have in one go from a bloke on behalf of his deceased neighbour. I picked up all the parts to build two RG's, two engine stands, brand new pacemaker extractors, 40mm webers and few other bits all for $900. The parts for the 88250 are all brand new, in toyota boxes with honed block. Bloody bargain hey!
Anyways enough of that crap, thanx heaps for ur advice and good luck with the new bolts.
Cheers, Pomey!

The toyota book has listings that would be correct for all 18RG heads, as they differ from those for the 18R/C head.
Trust the green book.
The ACL 18RG (actually 18RGEU) gasket kit lists the torque figures that are pretty close to what the green book has for the 18RC.
52.1 - 63.7 ft.lb. is good. We always go to 63.7 and have not had a problem.
The older the head, the more the need is for 63.7 so that any warping doesn't give an inadequate seal.
This won't matter if it has been surfaces though.
