PHOBIA 86' Toyota Corona. Getting Bagged.
|

How are ya troops? I just thought I would give you a little bit of back ground on my Corona that I have been building for quite some time. Actually, I've owned the Corona for 9 years after buying it of my Nan, that's right, my Nan in 1996. I drove the thing stock on my L's and into my P's and then the usual mods began, wheels, exhaust, suspension and so on. It wasn't until about 1999 that things started to get a little out of hand when the first "shitter" was bough to drive around in while I was working on the Corona.
I'll leave allot of the middle out as there was a fair bit of trial and error, fitting, changing or just sitting there doing nothing. Actually, it sat in a spray shop for 3 years doing nothing. The whole time I was always questioned about why would I build a Corona, and a 1986 Corona at that? This just inspired me, gave me the drive I needed to finish the car and finish it properly, to have a car that it different to the majority.
Following are a few select pics of the car and how it has progress. It has really been the last 18 months that the car has progressed and I can tell you that it is almost finished. The two major items on the to do list are suspension works, I will probably "bag it" so that I can bring a little bit of practability into driving it and still retaining the supper low stance that looks owe so hot when on show and a Garret GT35-40 hair dryer. The current set up is producing its max HP at 4200rpm and than the turbo is restricting flow causing a loss of power after that. We have put a lot into the engine, both in development and quality and will hopefully have it producing 350hp at the treads before the end of the year. The new flange for the manifold is already made and sitting there ready to weld onto the custom manifold, so as soon as I have the funds and the time available to tune it, that job will begin
Enjoy the photos and I will update this page regularly.
Sorry about the dodgy photos, but this shows the slow 12 month build up of the engine in no particular order.
Here are some pics of third paint job this Corona has received. It now retains its white base coat with 5 coats of House of Kolor green fleck with 7 coats of clear to seal in the goodness. Gives of a sparkly green effect in the light.

Following are a few of the interior half finished. That's what im doing at the moment. All beige leather and the usual stereo goodies.
Now we are at the present. The engine bay has been detailed and the front end is all back together. The rear bar is done and I will have some pics of the back end soon. I do hope you enjoyed the pics, sorry to the 56K guys and I hope to see you out and about cruising the streets or at the next event.

|
Yeah mate close, we converted a 22R actually, so it's not really the 22R-E out of this car originally. We used a 22R out of an early Hilux and used the manifold among other things of the 22R-E to run the fuel injection. Having said that though there is not a great deal of the original motor left internally either. Currently I am driving it around with 210 at the wheels at 20psi. The current turbo is far too small and the engine is making max power at just 4200rpm so the upgrade to the GT35/40 can't come soon enough. All things going well, 350hp at the wheels is looking very achievable with the current engine set up and the new hair dryer. I'll let yo know soon enough.

Thank h3ff44. Yeah, the style may not be custom, but the fit definitely is. New Style Motor Sport in Sydney made it up for me. If I remember correctly the front and rear bar was cut and shut to fit from a prelude and the side skirts where cut down 3 series BMW items. I think they did a pretty good job considering the boxy canvas they had to work will. I love the new lines of the car.

just a question what is the deal with it, to look cool with a smoke machine at a show or are they speed holes aka the simpsons. Or is it just to vent heat from the bay

It's to vent heat away from the bay, without the traditional and over done scoops and vents. The front slits are over the radiator, the 6 holes are over the engine and turbo, and the left hole used to be over the pod filter when the inlet was on that side of the bay. It's just different, like the fact that this is an 86' Corona modded to the hilt. Who does that???

I'm not disrespecting or anything, but asking the question, is your battery in your boot or in the engine bay, if the bay, what are those fuses doing in the boot?

That's not disrespecting at all Nath. The battery is in the bay, and so is the main fuse for the amps power supply. What you see in the boot is just a neater way to split the main power cable into two power cables for each amp.
Thanks for your support guys, im glad you like.

Ah good, I just recognised that distribution block as I have the same one myself. The amount of people who don't realise the fuses should be next to the battery astounds me.

Thanks mate, im glad you like. It picked up "Dare to be Different" and "Tearass Toyota" at its first show the NAS this month, but I don't think anyone has worry about me pulling up next to them at a set of lights. PHOBIA is now sitting in my garage without a head. I had to rip it of last night due to a blown head gasket. Seems I was giving it a bit much driving home from the NAS so now I won't be attending Toyotafest. I'm one pissed of fella that's for sure.
The head is in at the moment being inspected and serviced and a copper head gasket is being made for me as well. I have to have shit like this made all the time as buying parts of the shelf for a turbo 22R-E is not so easy. I will let you know how head comes up to. I hope its ok, as allot of hand honing man hours went into that head, so replacing it is now going to impress me.

She is still broke, but getting close to going again. I ended up having to source a new head, yeah a new one as nothing used was in the right shape. Anyway, had the new head delivered and polished up all the ports nice and smooth. I have just ordered new valves springs to lift the seat pressure without shims like the old set up. The 2mm custom copper head gasket arrived today and the new water ports are being drilled into the head tomorrow ready for refitting tomorrow night. The head will be set up exactly the same as last time except for the 2mm copper apposed to the 1mm steal head gasket that came out of it. Apparently the steel head gaskets are no good with an o-ringed block as they don't seat well enough. Where were all the experts when we did that..... Anyway, I have a date with the Dyno all day on Thursday, and all going well will have it pumping out similar figures to before ready for the Dyno event and Show and Shine at the National Auto Super Show this weekend. Don't you just love the pressure? I will keep you up to date.

My mate has a spare head for the 22re which is ported/polished, larger vavles and heavy duty springs... which has been sitting in the plastic for years... but anyway ... good shit .. gotta go crusing together when i have mine ready..

Thanks Assailant and yeah, New Style did there best with the kit.
Anyway, for those that care, the engine is now back together and running sound. Actually, it's running damn hot with 30psi of boost being shoved down its neck its running sweet. We where getting 280hp at the rears with serious traction problems the dyno graph was all over the shop, at 30psi it was making 200rwhp at just 3000rpm and over 600 newtons of torque, crazy for an old truck engine. For those that are cringing at the pressure we are putting on the engine you will be happy to know that the turbo is to be upgraded shortly. As i've said before, the series 4 13b rotary turbo we are using at the moment is far too small, so I will be strapping on the GT35/40 shortly. It's looking like the engine will be good for about 350rwhp at a more engine friendly 18psi of boost. I will know in the next 4 weeks anyway, our biggest concern is the fuel lines. If they cant flow the fuel from the 044 pump than a second line will be run. That will give each fuel rail (I have 2 rails remember) its own fuel line from the tank sharing one return.
Onto news of a different note, PHOBIA is of to Burn'in customs to be bagged. Obviously once again there will be allot of fabricating, as there isn't a kit available for a Corona but I think it will be worth it. I will be looking after the wiring and interior work with Brendan and Stuart looking after all the fab work. Not only will this be the first Corona to be laid out flat on the ground, it's going to be a lot more pleasurable for me to drive. Offcourse, pictures will follow as it all comes together. Wish me luck

Well kids, the good news is my new turbs and wastegate will be here at the end of the week. This time in a fortnight I’ll be posting up my new dyno sheet reading (it frikin better) in excess of 350rwhp.
PHOBIA is still in the shop waiting for me to wire up the new airbag kit. Laid out it sits so low.......30mm of the tarmac and still drives, stupid and crazy yes, but it looks shit hot. I'll post some pics soon.

How are ya guys, following is a couple of pics of the boot install with the addition of the air tanks. I have painted them gloss black with the House of Kolor green fleck like the rest of the car. It has come up ok I think. The third picture is my new toy that has just arrived. I have a date with dyno on Friday, so fingers crossed she likes her new home and pumps out some decent figures. Enjoy.
