You're asking what you should get for your first car? Honestly i would say buy a gemini or something, not a shitbox, just something that runs good and is nice, so you can get driving experience. plus your insurance for a boosted car (or any car of value)is going to be astranomical for a first car; if you can get it. Do the smart thing and wait until you are at least off your "P's"

Like pja11sc said, don't get a boosted car as your first car. Dispite how good a driver you might think you are, you need practice. Practice in something safe not to expensive 'cuz chances are you'll crash it atleast once. I'd go for an AE82 Corolla Twincam/AE93 Corolla SX. Both good cars, FWD so a bit safer for beginers (IMHO) and the insurance wont make your arse hurt after paying it. OR you could go an AW11 N/A. That'd be cool too.
As for Corolla vs. MR2, go the MR2. The Corolla isn't gonna make much more power before you can't keep the wheels on the road. The AW11 has more room to move. HOWEVER the arse on an AW11 loves to come around and I wouldn't recomend either of these cars as a first car.
Try an N/A car first. Lots of fun, safer, and cheaper. Move to boosted once you're off your Ps. You'll have lots of experience, and more money to play with.

GT-Four, being AWD is a very safe car. They are heavy, and hold the road well. They also have a tendancy to act a bit like a FWD (as they are a FWD that drives the back wheels as a bonus). They're also a little under powered for how fat they are (sorry GT4 owners, but you know it's true). The Commodore isn't what I would call a sports car. It's not particularly prone to spinning either (unless you do something very dumb). An AW11 will snap oversteer just for the hell of it. Think about it like this, the AW11 SC will have about as much power as your commodore, only it's 300kg lighter, with an LSD. Not only that but it's MR, adding to it's arse happy fun, and it's designed to have a nice response to steering input and a tight grip on the road. This gives you less of a chance to make a mistake.
Some experience is better than none, but i'd still advise an AE92 100kw ie AE82 88kw. They're good little cars, and the AE82 will be so cheap you don't have to worry much about it.
So how long have you been driving anyway? and how often do you drive?

Ahhh Get the car you want man. I ended up going down the safe route and one year down the track ive reached the limit of my car's performance.
MR2's can be unforgiving if they step out but as long as you understand that and find your limit in the car, go for it!
The Corolla's are nice but you will kick yourself for doing it.
I chose a AE82 FXGT over a genuine 55,000km TA22 for my first car, regretted it ever since.

Well if you've been driving for a year that changes things a bit, but only a bit.
I'd recomend either an N/A AW11, stock SC AW11 and wait a year before you mod it, or just get a N/A Corolla and save up for a very very nice AW11.

ok so they may have similar engines but they are TOTALLY DIFFERENT CARS.
I previously owned an AE82 twin cam it was a great car, and i currently own a stock NA AW11 and a hotted up SC AW11
If you want more than 2 seats and a shite load of TORQUE STEER get the Corolla, if you want a sports car get the AW11.
Take them both for a drive and see what you like.
IMO the pick for 7K would be find a good NA AW11, if you have another $1500 and you want one of the best around you can have a look at mine !
BTW did i say i hate TORQUE STEER !!!!, sorry but after owning a FWD i vowed never to own another one. I have driven some newer FWDs more recently that were alot better but you just cant compare to the driver enjoyment in an AW11 i have owned it for nearly 16 years and i still love it

i sort of agree, but i will tell you this i would much rather go into something backwards and on the throttle than terminally understeering into something
just go to a track and experiment with the handling, do a couple of driving courses.....which ever car you get. For sure they are very different to a Corolla. They will both power off oversteer but you would have to be trying pretty hard. In my opinion harder than you should be driving on the road anyway.

As you can see there are a few AW11 owners here to give our opinions.
However, I disagree with a couple of people who have said that you should go for an NA AW11, because this is not a cheap car to insure. an NA will cost you at least $1500 a year to insure an this would be the main reason i would say go for a cheper car, because your almost guaranteed to have an accident in the first 3-4 years of driving and not smashing up a nice car will make it easier.
i think what you should do is get a corolla, (AE82 or 92) and drive that around and get your no claim bonus up so the insurance companies dont tell you NO straight away for a better car, keep the rest of the money you have and put it towards an AW11 in a few years time.
I know the answers we are all giving you are probably not what you want to hear, but it will be better for you and your wallet.

he is a p plater, i doubt he will be going onto a track any time soon... or should he be driving like he is on a track on public roads
just get the rolla but an N/A one and do not modify it at all .. after 2-3 years (?) when u are off your p's get ur hotted up car with money u have saved from NOT modifying your na corolla

I got an sc AW11 as my first car.
Get the rolla, these things are vicious in unexperienced hands (I learnt that the hard way ). Insurance companies will not even want to touch you.
