Today i did some crazy stuff - not knowing what to Do .
and with little knowledge of fixing a Car or restoring it - i attemp to remove part from the car - carfully keeping the rusted NUTS and joints
Here is some of the Photo i took of the Car Now -
I and my father remove the right Door got a pcs of plastic window panel is stuck inside it half broken into two - - we remove the pcs of plastic and now is hunting for the glass window panel - cross finger
here is the right side view of the car after i remove the front panel
The front right side of the car is dented from some kinda impact so we remove it all the nuts is badly rusted and the lower end is badly damage
- will try to take photo of the front right pcs for viewing tomorrow
here is a photo of the Front right wheel can see that the car had been painted yellow before
The rusted door hinge 2 of the 6 pcs nuts had been replaces with some weird looking nuts - and all the nuts is badly rusted and the door panel itself is hack badly to install some ugly looking speaker pity this car more !!!!!!
This is front right headlamp and parking light lens area - is badly dented from a crash i assume - any suggestion on how can i fix this - i need front and rear bumper - anyone ?
I remove the LEFT chair - and the Floor mat inside is WET !!!!
so i remove every thing cutting away the old mat - reviewing The Badly RUSTED lower chassis - - feel like Crying - someone advice me on what should i do - i can see hole on the lower chassis and i think is like 1-2mm i worry if i put on leg weight on it it might fall off while i travel at 60km
- poor car!!! any good suggestion on how to fix this ?
Here is another photo on the left front chassis from the inside
.
I had also remove the RIght driver seat - is the same - in fact much much worst - will take some photo tomorrow - .
This is the Rust leaking part i saw on the rear right side of the car - i had remove the Paint with a tool - reviewing a large Rusted Patch about 2 feet wide - in fact about 1 cup of rusty water pour out of the side when i was trying to remove it .will take some photo tomorrow for viewing .
- This car is making me cry . but i know i will safe it and give hope to it
Please advice on and suggest .where i should start and what i should look out for . i need serious help here:) cheer .

unless you're a panelbeater & sprayer by trade, this car is gonna cost you a fortune to make proper. A rust patch 2 feet wide? and judging by all the other rust spots on this car (and salt deposits?) I'm guessing this car lived near the beach most of its life, and is very near going to celica heaven

To save this car,you are going to have to dismantle it completely and get it sandblasted. Then you can work out everything that needs to be done by looking at whats left of the car. ALL the rust will need to be cut out and new sheet metal welded in. The chassis needs to go onto an aligning jig once new chassis sections have been welded in just to make sure the car is straight. This car will take an extraordinary amount of work to restore back to good condition.

ra23's have a longer engine bay than the TA22's dont they?
they also dont have the same style flutes that he has.
im pretty sure its a ta22, with GT flutes, and im not sure if the ra23 had the "bonnet bulge" i know the ra28 did.
it also looks like a very tight fit in the engine bay, which further makes it look like a ta22, seeing as theres more room in an r series celica bay...
its been a while since ive bothered to learn anything new about these wonderful rides, so i am most probably wrong.
i applaude anyone that wants to do these things up, its quite the adventure!
i had one for a very short time, the workload to fix it was boardering astronomical.

Ok here is the Lastest Photo update of my RUSTY CELICA
Here are some of the RUST photo on te INterio after i took out All thE seats
May God have mercy on my celica
I think the Hedge for the Driver seat is Gone or broken off that why you see a large hole near on above image-rust5.jpg the late owner use a long nuts to tis it and a pcs of metal on the bottom to tighten it - that is why when i drive the driver seat is rocky - cos is not secure - !!! with that thin layer of chassis i am lucky to be alive driving the car home whahhahaha ANY IDEA WHAT IS BEST way to FIX it ???
RUsty RAG from under the carpet from the inner interio after i move it .
this is the inner shot of the car after all the seat is remove notic there is alot of HOLES - i recently had the handbrake installed and i felt that is too close to the Gear shift - The seat belt bucket is also damage -
The gear shift box is just supported by two pcs of steel plate losely mounted with a few nuts
Here a shot of the Handbrake i installed few days ago
here another shot from the another side of it - i am thinking to move the handbrake 2-3 inches back from the gear shift - or anyone suggest on what kinda car offer shorter handbrake handle - ???
TO BE COUNTINE ............

i dunno wat 'flutes' are exactly, but the ta22 didnt have those indicator style, and the ra23 im quite sure does have the scoop. from wat i remember, the ra23 has most the ra28 cosmetics. ofcourse not the rear, but the bonnet scoop and vents...
also, it would make more sense me thinks if it was a ra23, cause isnt this engine a straight bolt in?
if its not a ra23, its gotta be a ta23. cause they have the smaller engine bay, but all the ra23 cosmetics. its jus those indicators are a dead give away. the bonnet sorta comes over them and they are more rectangle then the ta22 style which are angle at the front and more triangular...
i could be wrong. plz sum1 correct me if i am...

on a seperate count, i think theres a good chance, that the majority of this car is made up of rust. remove it and ull be left wif 4 wheels, and a steering wheel.
and ofcourse ur gear nob... lol
if this celica didnt usually live near the sea, it was deffinetly under it at one stage?
its gonna take alot of work to do this, but if its the only one uve seen, then its gotta be rare and hard to get there. and all the more reason to do it.
but wouldnt it be easier to get one brought over from sumwhere else?
goodluck with it either way,

my advice - most important aspect is safety. The structural strength of the car is critical. Looks as though the car has takin a hit in the front right, hence the wheelbase difference. There's alot of rust but it can be fixed with a lot of work. So, first point of call is to get the chassis straightened and strengthened. Once you've got a straight car its going to come down to man hours to remove the rust and replace with new floor and panels etc.
Once you got a straight rust free car, im sure the folks here at toymods will have every major or minor modification possible for you to do.

it looks like the entire drivers side floor pan needs to be completely cut out and re-done, and that's at the least!
I'd be concerned about putting it on a chassis straightener... the chassis might straighten and break off all the rusted panels
you got yourself one helluva project there

- I Totally agree with the SAFETY aspect of re building a car - what the Point of having a car that look nice but can't give you the basis of secure when you travel -
I spend the whole day inspecting workshop and talking to people
trying to get the Most info - i am not sure if a Small workshop can deal with the body - on the other hand those big workshop charge a bomb -
So i got to make up my mind in a few days -
hERE A feW sure info -
the car neeed to be totally rebuild -
Clear of all rust
The front and back bumper need to be custom or somehow i find one
i am using 2k paint with good rust proof ( my idea not sure if it right please advice )
I would take full note of the safety advice and look into it - and might bring my limit higher to fix this Car .
Cheer showe me with advice and suggestion .
MY Guess is that this is a TA22 Not sure if it TA23
Look more like a GT
Here a phoo of the left view - the centre air vent is a custom not of the Org car -
The engine Is still a question 1G-GE or 1G-FE
my guess 1G-GE
Any clue ?

Hey, certainly looks to be an early ('71ish) TA22, based on the flat tail lights and front indicators and bonnet. Engine looks like a 1G-FE cause it's too thin to be a GE and has different cam covers.
Cheers

yeh, theres no doubt. that photo shows it better, for me atleast. the front indicators are angled. i thought they were flat b4.
yeh, its a ta22. my bad... better go get my eyes checked
and regarding engine, im not fully 'up to scratch' wif this. but it looks to me to be a 1gfe. but dont take my word for it.

Hi
I strongly susgest that you find another shell
that looks like a $10 000 plus job even if the workshop is willing to take on a project like that.
Im not sure if there are many First generation celicas where you are but you could at least find a decent stock shell and transfer the engine and other goodies over?
As for the engine i would guess that it is a 1GFE motor. please note i have never seen a 1GFE however it doesnt look like any if the 1GGE's i have seen and it has very similar cam covers/head construction to a 4AFE which is essentially a 4 cylinder version of this engine.
Daniel.

definitly a TA22, but not a 71, has got a side fuel filler instead of the one between the taillights.
osix, pre 77 celica's (on this side of the world at least) never came stock with a G series engine which is part of the reason people are unsure of what it is, somebody has probably done an engine swap.
as for fixing it i'd say it would be expensive, but worth it if its the only one over your way. for floor pans you'd be best off finding a panelbeater who can build new ones to suit from scratch. this would be a pretty expensive way to go though, hope you've got heaps of spare dollars.
and for bumpers and stuff have a look in the parts for sale section, i'm sure there are people who could send stuff over your way. would add to the expense but still cheaper than getting custom stuff made up.
good luck
Matt

Hey, like someone suggested, maybe it will be cheaper and safer, to get a new shell. You can probably ship one from OZ, to where you are, cheaper then fixing this! That is ALOt of rust!

the guys are right - the body looks shot mate..
you would be better off trying to source another shell to start with if you want a ta22 or early celica.. theres going to be ALOT of money and time involved refabricating all the parts that have oxidised beyond repair, that is Unless you know someone whos fully quialified to re engineer the car , basically from scratch ..
Just my 2 cents - sad to seea a project you seem so keen on doing , but alas , this one seems to be beyond redemption

in summary - its fucked. unrepairable and unsafe. it has seriously been at the bottom of a fish tank for 30years. there is NO metal left!!!! its all just solid rust!!!
what you are considering is not a 'restoration' rather a 'complete recreation'
buy a new shell. full stop

as I said before, it's FUBAR. looks like it was used as a keel in a yacht for extended periods.
As Ed said: you won't be doing a restoration, you'll be building it from scratch.
chassis is bent from the acco, every panel is fucked (including all floorpans, boot pan). so there's not much really worth keeping there.
I'm all for the "big project" restoration, but generally for one of those ultimate projects you start off with a decent chassis and a few panels, and above all else *minimal rust!*.

One of the Very Reason i Am putting effort to restpring this Car
Is Cos i Believe that - Everything can be FIT
After all IF someone out there Made the First Car - And so on
All can be Done - And Till This days there are still CAr that is HAndMade _
My only problem Now is Tools . to get the right jog Done , you need the Right tools.
Here in Thiland is so limited with Tools .
So much of the Restpration is Done using IMagination
Much time is done sitting thre trying to Imagine what can be Done and how to
come up with way to replace the lack of tools to get the job done -
Alot of advice is Greatly helpful to me here .
eg. the floor panel replacment ,
ThIs car is really at it BEST ( bottom up )
that why it to take more attention to get it to it BEST
Alot of the Interio i had not cover - so far we are just touching the Surface
THE axle - the disc brake Unit
The engine is all un touch - i would expect more problem to come
and more thing to slove
My greatest problem now is
EXTERIO DOOR HANDLE - RIGHT SIDE
FRONT PARKING INDICATOR - RIGHT ( Whole unit -)
FRONT AND REAR BUMPER ( i need the Measurment )
Tail Light ( i am considering finding something to replace it - or modify it
IF anyone can get me this stuff please let me know and we will arrange for payment and shipment - A.s.a.p

Thanks you everyone for your words of advice and support

if I was feeling really mean I'd put a poll up so everyone can rate the chances of this project getting finished the floor pan will actually be relatively easy, you can just bodgy it up with sheet metal. of course, everything you weld that to will have to be rust free, and just about every piece of metal I can see is thoroughly rusted

You're mad.
As much as I admire your persistence, there comes a time when a car is simply not worth recovering.
You could easily get one without rust in AU for ~1000$. Add in shipping and it'll still cost less than recreating yours from scratch.

yeah look honestly, i've seen cars rebuilt from worse conditon - and you're right, anything is do-able, it's just metal - but like the others said, it's going to be quicker, cheaper, safer, and you'll end up with a better, stronger, cleaner overall car if you just take the good bits out of this shell, find another old celica, and have this death trap taken to the crusher
that's what you'd do over here, where you could probably pick up a half decent old celica for a few hundred bucks, and a really neat one for under a few thousand, it may be different where you are from
however, if you're serious about this car, stop what you're doing right now. focus on the bent chassis and non-existant structural strength of the floor before you even THINK about little things like the handbrake or gearbox or indicators. this car really needs to be stripped of anything that can be unbolted, put on a rotisserie and have over half the body metal re-made from new plate and box section
much like this car

1G GE - is a early model - early 1982 - 1986 i think
1G FE is a later model - Early 1988 - 1990
THe GE model is a SPort model .
FE is a more economy model
Well i hope i got this right but you can get info online easily with Toyota engine spec
Will be dis-mounting the Engine next week - and will take more photo and see what Engine i am using

seriously osix, don't waste the money on paint yet, you NEED to fix the other problems this car has before that. painting is the LAST thing you do
my god, look at the rails! the first time you drop the clutch or get sideways in this thing, you'll probably tear it in half! fix the rust

Your persistance and dedication is nothing short of staggering.
When I first started reading this, I've thought
"There's no way. He'll get into it, and then realise how much work is involved, and move onto something else".
Glad to be proven wrong!
I think your next step is the chassis rails. If you don't know what they are, your workshop man should. Judging from the pictures, there looked to be quite a bit of rust underneath your car in the chassis rails. It is absolutely critical that you get ALL of this rust cut out and re-welded. Whatever you do, DON'T LEAVE IT! Chassis rail rust is probably the single most import piece of rust to get rid of.

Hi
Thanks you'll so Much for the support and advice .
joorsh - i am not sure what is a Chassis RAIL ..
BUt i am assuming this one is the One -
I try to replace most of the MAIN _BONe on the Car -
Here a attach photo - letme know if i am wrong - or try to indenty the part for me
I had custom that - making it aboout 1.5 inches larger then the Original part Under the Floor panel - , are you refering to the Parts That is supporting the FLoor panel ( chassis rail ? )
This Pcs is from the front to the driver seat lenght -
i have both had extra lenght and width to it - as well as the thickness of the metal . 1.6mm - had a hard time trying to get the metal panel shop to make extra groove on the panel to strenghten the floor panel .
Or is it a Cross Bar that is across from the left to right ?
will show some photo son made that already .
kindly show me some kinda photo - if you can . all this is SO new to me . and i am trying hard even to understand The name of each parts .
THis is my first CAR . and my first celica
