well I went to an exhaust mechanic to get the exhaust made on my sprinter (not the one for sale) after I installed the 4age. It's an august 1983 model sprinter. The exhaust shop is also my local EPA agent so he clears those defects etc. His advice was that if the car was made before November 1983 then it doesn't require a cat (in my case anyway).
Before I knew this I was trying to convince him to make it without a cat - when I thought I needed one, and he said there was no way that he would do it, unless it didnt' need one.
Maybe this is one for the tech section?
