Car of the year 2002 my foot!! I know you guys are all Toyota freaks so probably wouldn't buy Holden anyway, but tell your mates!!
I bought mine 12 months ago the list goes like this..
1) First trip down to the Gold Coast (I live in Toowoomba) the engine light comes on. Becomes very hard to start.
2) Second time it gows for another trip to the coast, and I hardly get home! As soon as I accelerated, it splutters and nearly dies. The engine had started getting a bit noisy as well. They replace the computer and turns out the rattle was the timing belt rubbing on pulleys!! (around 15000k's on it) So no probs, just get a new one, with new pulleys and everything.
4) Just after new years I come home from Mackay, mate breaks map pocket (rests foot on it, DUH!). BUT WAIT FOR IT.... I cannot even get a new one!!! This item is a clip on plastic pocket $50.00 Maximum!!) I have to buy an entire new door card for around $250.00!!! This is what really annoys me DONT BUY HOLDEN CAUSE YOU CAN'T GET PARTS

SirVH,

Argue the point with your Holden Dealership....
I work for a holden dealership and if you argue it enough they will do it... give them a good story on how it broke (make one up that sounds realistic) then just carry on about how its a BRAND NEW CAR and it shouldn't fall apart, then change the subject and say how you could have been killed when the car stalled on the high way which means your Power Steering didn't work....

You'd be suprised the stuff that i replace at work, and when i ask the Service Manager why we are replacing something that looks obviously broken by the customer, he just says "We cant't Prove it" so that means we change it.......

Hope it helps in some sorta kinda way.....

Bale

P.S. The XC barina had some drama's with the EGR valves causing the Engine Light to come on and the car hard to start......

Bale9, thanks for the advice. I have already tried this appoach and so far no good (Re the door card). I have emailed Holden's head office and the state manager copped an earfull on Friday afernoon! I have even suggested checking the EGR valve, but all they wnt to do is replace computers! Hey you don't happen to know how to override the (pain in the arse) traction control??
Thanks.

a friend of mine had similar problems, and she took it back to the dealer and they fixed it free of charge and gave her a courtsy car for the day.

I'm not sure if it affected the Z18XE1 as it affected my Astra but there were problems with the Astra's immobiliser preventing it from starting/hard to start. I've had my ECU updated (though it was suppose to be done on all the 02 spec Astras) as well as the crank sensors replaced as well as the infamous rear disc dampers.

I think the tactic is to not be rude to them but show lots of concern. At least you get more sympathy that way rather than kicking and screaming. I'm not sure about those dealers but for the group of dealers I work for, they have a certain amount the service managers can play with to write off. Say that you are a good customer... etc etc...

Sorry, the EGR problem was on the Z14XE engines. sorry my fault...

The hard to start problem on the SRI is similar to what "Smellytofu" said.

There is an Intermittant comunication failure between the Immobiliser and the ECU, to rectify it the ECU must be flash programmed with the latest software (this is out of the TECHLINE from November 2001).

but this is only for hard to start, not stalling... there doesn't seem to be anything in the TECHLINE about a stalling problem for the SRI Barina's but i'll keep an eye out for anything....

At the dealership i'm at its crap... Unless your actually good buddies with the Service Manager or advisors it seems to me the people that yell and scream get more than the nice guy, its probably different at other places but thats the drift i get...

Bale, I've heard on the grapevine that there is a techline on the use of Mobil 1 on the Z18 and Z22 causing problems (think noisy or hard to start problems). Is that true or is that just a rumour? I'm running Mobil 1 on my Z18XE1 but haven't had any problems with it. It's "sorta" noisy though I'll check again tomorrow.

With the ECU update, they said that the sticker on the side of the compartment down on the right should have the box B3 crossed off. Mine was crossed off but the actual update wasn't done.

Thanks guys, I have tried being really nice and helpfull and all that for the last 12 months. My local dealer does have a bit of a bad rep. But still, they have been OK. I think the main problem is GM central (Aust). So I am taking the door card to the plastic welders and they fix it for $40.00. I am sick of arguing the point with somebody who is a puppet and really doesn't have the power to do anything! I will probably trade it on a Rex Wagon soon anyway, and concentrate on putting the turbo'd 1UZ into the ol' VH. Unless I loose my job that is!! This drought really sucks!!

The only thing that i can see that is in the Techline is a problem with a batch of Oil Filters, that could fail and cause some of the oil galleries to block and sieze the camshaft...

This was from July 2002 techline....

Other than that i can't see anything about the Mobil 1 thing....
Sorry dude, i couldn't see anything about it....

I think that it'll be ok....
I've put Mobil 1 into astra's before....
