looks to be in pretty good nik..
the boys have covered pretty much everything,
take out the spare and check for rust.
but at that price i think its a good buy.
is that a "twin cam 16" badge in the grille?
I always thought it said "TOYOTA"

I tend to see more 87+ ST162's getting around I guess the only way to prove it would be to find out how many Toyota brought into Australia (year by year) throughout the models lifespan. But if it had the same amount of distribution through its life, averages would rule that there are more 87+'s getting around; the more time spent on the road would increase the chance of an accident and deterioration through wear - but that's just being picky..
I think the stock rims are better on the series one, and I think the series one front grille looks tougher from the front only - every other angle I rather the series two. Have you ever noticed how few series one eyelid/grilles still actually line up?

I'm not sure what you mean... I'm just saying that the grilles are often wonky. Since the series two grille is one peice, lines along the bonet and front bar look straighter.

cracked engine pipes are very common on these cars, just get some extractors
oil leak?? could be anything, find out the exact cause if you are worried

cost of extractors?
um yeh oil leak somewhere mechanic will fix it when he services it
they said timing belt changed 1 year or last year...
but its at 19X,XXXkms
soo if it was changed at 100,000kms when it should be? it should be due soon right
also mechanic was worried about the engine looked like it had dropped or moved before its left side is actually against something

well if it was done a year ago I doubt that its done 90,000kms since the timing belt change. if it was done a year ago it should be right for another 5 years or so. the faults are very minor and are quite common for the st162.
maybe come to an agreement with the seller to discount the car the cost of the repairs.

Well I have owned my 162 for 22 months now and for about 20 of those I have been dreaming/planning to drop a 3rd gen 3SGE into it.
Well last week I went and picked this up:

It's a 3rd gen that came out of a '99 ST202 half cut. No idea though if the box (an S54) is LSD or not, I have a feeling that the LSD box was only fitted to the BEAMS ST202s. I got the whole deal (engine, box, ECU, loom, mounts, airbox, sensors, throttle cable, yadda yadda) for $1850.
Won't be installing it straight away, need to build the funds back up a bit first (damn mortgage!), probably around August/September. In the meantime I'll be hoarding together everything else I need. So it's still a little while off yet, finally having the engine in my posession makes it feel THAT much closer to happening!
So Andy, sice you're just finishing this conversion - be ready for me to pick your brain!!

Haha, no problem! You know where to find me! Geez that picture brings back memories...
For you guys who haven't seen, mine looks like this now:

Started her up (first go) on sunday night. She's at the exhaust shop now getting fixed up. I'm getting 2" piping and a Redback straight through muffler. It wont sound as 'fully sick' as a 2.25" but it'll flow just as good and not drone as bad in the cabin. I'm picking it up tomorrow or the day after, pretty pumped!
I drove it down my street last night with the exhaust unhooked, sounded pretty mean (even tho i didn't take it higher than 3000 revs). It was loud enough to set off Adrians car alarm from about 15 metres away and to get a cranky old man yelling at me... I suppose it was pretty late at night.

is there any difference between the head on the ADm and JDM heads?why im wanting to know this is my heads about to be sent away for porting.matching and a whole heap of work and im thinking about buying a JDM block and ECU so that i can have the higher compression and thus get more out of my car down the track.IS there any differences between castings and galleys etc at all?

Cue music: Eye of the Tiger
Coming to a set of traffic lights near you! Nah, we should do a cruise down to calder park one friday and run all the cars down the quarter mile. Would be interesting.
Believe it or not, Adrian actually parted with his keys and let me drive his car. It was only down my street but damn, that engine is definetly a lot more responsive than an ordinary gen 1! I only touched the throttle intending to go to about 3000 revs goin up this slight hill, but it ripped around to 5 grand and spun the wheels so easily! I was impressed!

Me and Adrian have had LENGTHY discussions about Powerchip vs. MegaSquirt, suffice to say I didn't manage to get him interested in the MegaSquirt. If he wishes he can state his reasoning, but I will say that I personally believe Adrian had been misled, or has mis-interpreted what Powerchip has said to him. This is purely based on what Adrian has said to me about his understanding of the Powerchip, and my own personal discussion that I had with Powerchip's Toyota specialist.
Powerchip's product is good, I would go so far as to say it would make a great improvement or upgrade for a relatively stock ST162, but make sure you know the limitations of it and what it can and can't do.

Oh StuC -> damn good question! I dunno if you remember but I had in my hands a head off of an ST162 that was slightly different from the head on my ST162, not in any major structural way. There is no difference in any galleys etc, but there may be some differences in emissions stuff, apparently some heads have a EGR port that runs directly off the exhaust port, rather than off the exhaust manifold.
As for differences in combustion chamber shape? Hmmm - can't answer that one as I'm not taking any heads off of cars in any great hurry I reckon that if anything the pistons would be different in order to effect the rise in compression ratio, rather than redesigning and coming up with a whole new assembly for a cylinder head.

The odo on the half cut read 53865km. Considering it's only a '99, I'm inclined to believe it. Still going to replace as many seals as I can though, and probably the clutch too unless the clutch in this one looks really good. I hear that clutches on most Japanese imports are pretty shagged from all the stop-start city driving over there.

Stu, I've got 2 motors to get rid of (one complete + one dismantled). They've got to go!
Linkage:http://forums.toymods.org.au/index.php?t=msg&t h=68580&start=0&rid=5197&S=8e1a4e6ee55 93e9d5b5eefbf78fd7246
There's a few other Celica bits to get rid of too, check it out. (Pls. excuse the shameless plug )
Got my car out on the road, it frikin flies! Easily breaks traction accelerating in 3rd gear, I'm loving it! Only problem is that the mount that was slightly broken is now completely broken and is making the whole car vibrate like it was powered by AA batteries. Soon enough she will live again!

My long awaited package from Europe arrived today:

A set of front driving lights, designed to fit into the slots in ST162 front lip.
And the main attraction:

A set of Koni and Eibach coilover (adjustable height, adjustable dampening) suspension struts!
