I had this problem on my celica belt, it was hard to pull out until oneday it didn't at all, I pulled the belt retrator unit out open it up, lubed everything but the cause of it was the little clip wasn't realeasing so I pulled it out and put it back together, were the spring went onto it was broken, and its been fine ever since.
sure I should have bought another one, but this was free and only took about 30mins

has anyone covered the bouncing/non functioning speedo cable repair job?
and why does my check engine light come on when im speeding! only to have normal engine temp, oil levels, water levels etc. when i turn my car off and back on the engine light is off again.

i've neglected to advise that im running all MAP gze parts. box, engine, and dash. is it still the cable? as ive been told by a mechanic that my speedo is electronically sensored.

Well thats very interesting !!!!!!!!
Is it running the standard dash and gauges etc ???
As far as i know the actual speedos on all models had an input from a mechanical rotating speedo cable.
I know its possible to have an electronic sender on GZE gearboxes but how that would provide info to a mechanical speedo is beyond me.
Also just a note as far as i know standard GZE engines in AW11s were never MAP sensor engines............maybe i can be proved wrong !!!
Can someone with a stock JDM GZE confirm this ??????

they are cable driven speedo's. (that includes the rwd gze AFM E51 and the fwd gze MAP E58).
aznpsuazn, cheapest check to do 1st is make sure the cable is tight into the 90 degree dogleg doobie that hangs off the gearbox (mine came loose once which caused the speedo to 'bounce') or failing that pull the 90 degree dogleg doobie off the gearbox and check the little drive pin hasnt worn on the small lug it has on each end.

thanks for the replies
i will try to find the speedo cable and detach it.
my car is the aus spec aw11 with the map gze planted into it. so its not the imported aw11 with afm, targa, etc.
if someone happens to have a picture of the location of the speedo cable, it would be much appreciated! (not that im lazy but it took me 4 attempts to find it in my old sx)

regardless of afm/map if you are using the facotry guage cluster then it must be a cable operated gearbox.
oh and not *all* import GZE's are targa... some of us are lucky enough to have picked hard top gzes

i really havent got opportunity to play around when it comes fixing stuff on my car, its parked at front of a busy sydney street and not so convenient to play around with stuff. thats why i just want a quick in and out swap that will definately fix it. only time i can probably do this is at night aswell with a torch, daytime at my place is no different then a shopping carpark even i have to pay yearly fee to be able to park infront of my house for more then 2hr, and thats IF i can find parking hahah

Klippan do replacement belts. go to your local autopro or repco store, they should be able to get you the right one and fitting bracket if required.
i dont do spare parts anymore (as of 3 weeks ago) so i cannot look up the part numbers for you sorry.

yeah thanx feral, i went to repco and got a price, was $93 for braket and seatbelt (wonder why they arent one unit?) and waiting 4 days. bit expensive plus i dont even know if it will fit into my stock buckle. i think im gonna try find second hand one somewhere
still dont understand why it was locking up, when i had the seat belt out, and getting it in the right position, the clip let loose so. maybe its just worn and very sensitive on slightly incline it locks. i'll put it back tonight again see if i can temporary get it working for a while

with Klippan it should come with a new stalk as well, thats how we sold them at work.
the ones in the 2 arent exactly 90 degrees up either by memory, so it needs a 60/70 degree (or something like that it was) retractor to work and the bracket is needed as it mounts into the side pillar.

oh yeh, noones else interested in buying my aw11???
i had two really interested person but dont know why they havent responded to my lastest pm now that i ready to sell it
i probably be dropping the price comes next yr since rego gonna be out
i think its a reasonable price since people are paying $1500 or so for GZE engine alone, this is a whole car for $3500, not in great cosmetic condition but its ideal for restoration, or parts car.
if only i had storage i would never want to sell it
anyways, if in sydney, drop my a pm if you want to inspect or test drive it. fellow aw11 owners of this thread only as im not interest in tyrekickers and not urgent to sell either

feral4mr2 wrote on Mon, 04 April 2005 20:58 | GUN METAL 87 SC, there is a 90 degree dogleg doobie that the speedo cable screws to on the s/c gearbox. inside it is a little pin that has a lump/notch on either end. when my speedo stopped woring after the 4agze swap in 99 it was the pin that was broken. well not broken but one of the drive notches had shearded off. heres a pic of the 90 degree bit, dont have one of the pin though.

|
I FiNALLY FIXED MY SPEEDO. After 9 months!! What a relief!!
Took me ages to figure out what was wrong. I thought it was the cable ( speedo wouldnt spin with drill attached to gbox end of cable)
But I also discovered that I had a broken pin as feral has described above. Also a broken gearbox drive (shattered where the pin goes in)
Both parts have been replaced and it works well now, However,
the speedo needle bounces up and down at low speeds. Af few mm either side... Does anyone know what could cause this??

yeah she's factory red but its had a dodgy respray before and now the paints all peeling and waters getting under the paint and all. basically it needs a full respray
that pic i took is when it was at its best condition. it now has alot of dents and rust, i've had 3 hit and run so far, latest person i caught but later denied her fault. i only have 3rd party and they not willing to help much
interior is breaking apart like broken triangle near windows, rip carpet etc...
suspension is bit worn like it need rear shocks, some rear bushes, rear disc and caliper overhaul etc...
really car isnt so crash hot as it may look, i know it isnt helping with my sale but im just being honest. only thing that hasnt given me a problem is the engine. i drive this thing pretty hard and its never let me down. i dont have the space to look after this car.
reason why im letting it go cheap, i know it would be very useful to another aw11 owner as a parts car, or if they willing to spend alot of time on it to restore it
i reckon if i rip it apart to sell for parts, i get almost what im after altogether
anyways, dont worry guys, sometime in the future i will be back with another aw11, when i move into a house with some working space. thats what im saving those stickers i bought off toof for

yeh man i love my plate aswell its one thing im proud of on my car and its staying with me forever
i got it a while back not sure when. i originally wanted AWI15C but then i thought it looked abit weird. all sudden rta came out with new plate style and it was perfect
only problem... few times already i overheard people talking to each other wondering if my car was an 11sec car when they see my plate
one day after i had gone pass the 400m post at wsid and my fone rings, i ripped of my helmet and answered while on the return line, it was a friend i hadnt seen in a while asked me whats wrong with my car??? i said whats wrong and he was just disappointed to see it run 14sec instead of the 11sec as stated on the plates and he was dead serious about it. i kinda felt embarrassed

i still got the 160mm pulley i think its HKS i might throw back on the car and drop the price, keep the nevo for my future aw11

i had two really interested person but dont know why they havent responded to my lastest pm now that i ready to sell it
i probably be dropping the price comes next yr since rego gonna be out
i think its a reasonable price since people are paying $1500 or so for GZE engine alone, this is a whole car for $3500, not in great cosmetic condition but its ideal for restoration, or parts car.
if only i had storage i would never want to sell it
anyways, if in sydney, drop my a pm if you want to inspect or test drive it. fellow aw11 owners of this thread only as im not interest in tyrekickers and not urgent to sell either

gun metal... if you only you could of stuck around on the dyno day. Well... its going in to get it all check out, and if its the head gasket, new metal gasket goes in, if its the rings, its time for a big dollar motor to go in. either way, fun isnt too far away.

WOOOPS !
Yep, drove it out of the shed
The fuel pump is stuffed, picking one up tonight from crownman after doing some dynamic air pressure testing with 4agte
Go to the classifieds section if you want some more pics but heres one for the rest of you...just to get and idea

Its really cool......will make an awesome cruiser, it runs really smooth
i am thinking sit it on the bump stops, some bling for the wheels and a metalic black paint job.
Unfortunately my father does not seem to like old cars and does not want me to keep it
What do you all think ????
