Yep, there was definately too much free airspace around the 4A, it was too easy to work on This should solve that problem

yeah.... blacking out the c-pillars makes a big difference. Did it to my KE wagon
We installed a 1jzgte/r154 in my friends ae86 coupe almost 2years ago. First install left the firewall untouched. Pulley ~1/2 inch from the rad support, so radiator sits in a moded cradle. Surprisingly there is still a good bit of room on the sides of the motor to work on it.
After rod bearing problems, now has a 2jzgte block from the dealer. Reinstalled the 2j ~4 inches back by sectioning the firewall & tunnel mods, so radiator now sits in original position. Car still nose heavy tho (still a long motor). I gave him some starion front springs that firm up the front end decent.
On slicks, the car will lift the front wheels ~12". With a t66 @20psi pulls ridiculously hard. Waaayyy too violent for my taste. When you're not hooking, you're spinning (10" street tires), tryin' to keep the car straight - I'm not going back in that thing! A 1j on stock twins should be substantially more sedate, controllable and less brutal.
This 4agte wagon was one of my favourite corollas. I'm builing a ae86 hatch with a similar powerplant setup. Should I decide to pull the 4ag, I hope to find a kp61 starlet to drop the drivetrain in - the perfect match.
Next ae86 swap candidate ? ...toyota 3.4L v6/5speed (not measured it yet). Seen one put 440 ft-lbs tq to the ground, t4 at a measley 14psi - stock motor, oe ecu, 440s, safc, hacked mafs. Very impressive for a common, inexpensive, silky smooth, "bolt-on mods" motor. I prefer the shorter/wider v6 fit and must retain airconditioning.
this 1J panelvan will be mental, for sure

Interesting, sounds like that AE86 was a bit of fun
I'll most likely convert the front struts to coilovers, and select an appropriate spring rate to suit the extra weight.
I've always been more keen on a 1MZ-FE 3 litre V6 for this car, but price, availability & some difficulties in converting to RWD in aus just made it too expensive for my liking. Maybe oneday.......

Here's some progress shots. Engine & gearbox are fitted properly now on custom mounts, added trans cooler, heater hoses, intercooler plumbing, external wastegate, turbo water hoses & started the dump pipe.

GT30 comfortably sitting in its new home:

Trans cooler, gearbox crossmember, and official conversion supervisor in the background:
