New Corolla

Read in the paper about new small cars coming out in the next month or two. First there was the new Focus, something like 132kw (something in the 130's). Then there is the turbo astra which gets about 147kw and last but far from least!!! a new corolla (corolla sportivo) which has the current celica engine in it at 140kw. I was drooling on the paper... damn i'd love to smash lancers and astra's in that. Anyone reckon they would have much potential?

Well i have ranted the 5 speed standard rolla and real nice inside, pretty sporty sort of as it is, 140kw would be a damn nice package.
Lifted the bonnet on the rental , so heavy ! well compared the the carbon or alum bonnets i am used to I am sure you could loose some weight out of the rolla as well.

toyota should put the effort into giving the celica some real balls - Corollas still designed as a low cost small family car option - even if it does have a hotter motor
Celica has the chassis , the handling but not the go to go toe to toe with an integra type R and thats where the performance market is now - either big arse V8's aka commodore falcon - or WRX, integra tripe R , 200SX ..
Bring BACK THE GT4 ! Or at least give the current celica a factory turbo option !

It'll all depend on the chassis balance of the Corolla and the handling dynamics.
The engine is excellent, that's a given. Head flows better than a ITR ( http://www.alaniztechnologies.com/typervs2zzge.htm l)
Won a award in Europe last year for best engine design in the 1.4 to 1.8 litre capacity segment. etc etc. The 2ZZ-GE is a modern day cousin of the 4AGE.
Australian reviews on the current Celica have been luke warm to say the least. Go read about them in US publications and they get rave reviews. On paper, the power and torque outputs were pretty line ball with the previous ITR, the chassis, gearing and lack of front factory LSD were the things that let down the car.
In short, the car's got potential, just wait and see if it's good enough stock compared to it's immediate competetion.

It's shame I don't have $10K for the Blitz supercharger kit. Just remember let the engine warm up to the 2nd notch for temp. gauge for the car or you wont be able to hit the 2nd cam profile.
