Exhaust diameter Wed, 21 May 2003 04:02 Go to next message
Just a simple question. Does a bigger exhaust diameter mean a louder exhaust?

thanks

Yes. But it also depends on your muffler setup.

You can have a stock system, then a stock system with only 1 muffler and it will be reasonably loud.

But on an NA car it also means a loss of torque lower in the rev range.

2" or 2.25"

any larger than that, and you start getting the farty bumblebee sound that civics with 5" tips have.

besides, 1.6n/a, you wont exactly have flow problems... so a 2" or 2.25" plus a decent quality muffler is all you'd want

it's not too bad
all depends on how good the muffler is of course... they make hundreds of $$$ difference

How much power are you making?

I personally would not go over 2" unless your 1.6L is pushing some serious power.

Also, 4As are noisy engines (with regards to exhaust noise). I've heard many 2.25"s on 4As and they've all been loud.

fwiw, i have a 2" on my 1.3L, but it usually sees pretty high revs Wink.

i also have tuned length extractors, 2 resonators!, and a large chamber reverse flow muffler at the back (15x9x6"). it doesn't restrict the motor and having lotsa of quietening? devices hepls keep noise down... my intake is way louder than my exhaust...

so bigger is not always louder IF you choose your mufflers wisely. a big straight thru muffler will make a lot of noise, but a large diameter, reverse flow muffler will make a huge difference to noise while not restricting the exhaust that much...
