icon5.gif  Big Fuel Filters? Mon, 23 June 2003 05:20 Go to next message
Ok ive been running around today looking for a big inline fuel filter for my new fuel setup, but all the idiots in the shops have been tellin me that its impossible.

I need a 1/2 inch inline filter and so far the only ones ive found, you need to have fuel lines that actually screw into the filter!

Anyone know where i can get a basic one? my pump has a half inch feed, so i assume there must be a filter for it! C'mon those 1UZ boys must be using huge lines and filters!!!?

I got one from a 300zx .. It has just the standard barb type fittings on each end that fuel line slides onto. Its 8mm fittings though.

C'mon guys! im sure some one will know if there is such a filter.

its the only thing holding me up before my car runs properly! so im pretty damn keen to find out if i can get this filter!

What do hugely worked V8's use then? im sure they would need 1/2 inch fuel lines and therefor a half inch filter!?

why not use two smaller ones, then a reducing T piece? easy then to source the filters and double capacity. all ya need is two T adaptors, and a few bits of fuel line...

Why do you want to run 1/2" fuel lines? I think you'll find most (not all) of us who have done a conversion would have used 8mm fuel lines. Even the guys running 1js and 1uz.

Yeah im not using 1/2 inch thru the whole thing, its just the inlet of my hi-pressure pump is half inch, and it is fed from the bottom of my surge tank which is also half inch.

The reason i want a filter in this line is a mate of mine killed 3 pumps before he figured that it was tiny bits of weld & shit comming from inside his surge tank. I dont want this, so i figure a filter in the 1/2 inch feed is the go.

Any other ideas?

I might be wrong but didn't think you could put a filter before the hiflow pump. I thought it had to go after it?

They are gravity fed and don't like feeding through the filter.

Don't you have a prime pump? Put it before that if so. Then put the filter after the hiflow pump.

Cheers
Joel

Yeah, im not sure about how the gravity feed will go thru the filter i was just gonna test the differences in flow rates with and without the filter to see how it goes.

Maybe i will just have to blast out my surge tank and hope that no tiny flecks of weld or rubbish come from inside the tank?

from memory i think an efi falcon ea or eb uses a filter
that is quite large, and has nipples rather than screw-ins.
check between the throttle-body inj and multi-point inj versions

My 6cyl ED is not a 1/2inch line, maybe the V8 has a different setup.

Ryco does make 1/2inch filter, I should be able to get the part number early next week.

I'm pretty sure you'll run risk of killing your pump by putting a filter infront of it, the whole idea of the surge tank is to provide it with an unrestricted & constant flow, so it doesn't have to suck, it only has to push.
If you look at any factory EFI pump they have big mesh strainers on the pump inlets (I'm talking about in-tank pumps here) that would stop big stuff getting through but would cause no restriction to flow.

Just make sure you give the surge tank a really good rinse out before installing it, I'd be suprised if there was much loose material inside, unless the welding was really dodgy. And run a low pressure fuel filter infront of the low pressure pump, & this will protect both pumps.

I agree with joel but if you do need a 1/2 inch in line fuel
filter then i have some mercedes benz filters in stock. You will,
however, have to take a trip to your local ENZED, KWIKFIX or
other hose fitting specialist and buy some 1/2 inch threaded
tails to screw into it. These sell for around the $4 - $5 mark
and the filter is worth around $20. Definately use a plastic
in line filter before the low pressure pump though.
Ryco No. Z15 is 5/16 and Z153 is 3/8. Hope this helps. Phill.

Having a few probs getting this part number for ya

Its a metal Ryco one

This is where my mate gets his from
KWINANA AUTO ONE
Kwinana Trades & Commercial Cntr
Shop 23 Meares Ave Parmelia 6167
Ph (08) 9439 2293
Fax (08) 9419 2290

Give them a call, they stock both disposable and reusable ones.

My mate runs it between the fuel tank and swirl pot/surge tank on his drag torana.
