1jz aftermarket twin turbos
|

ok, I know the big single turbo option has been covered to death... but what twin turbo options are a viable upgrade?
I'm after around 500-600bhp
at the moment I'm looking at the gt25 or gt28 garrett turbos, rollerbearing.
I figure twin gt25s should be good for *very* fast spool up, and should net me around the 550bhp mark (which would be fine)
can anyone make any other suggestions/comments, or is this the best way to go while keeping price sensible? (ideally I'd love a twin set of hks, but they're really expensive)

I think you're onto the right idea, really - twin HKS would be brilliant, but even a Rothschild would raise an eyebrow at the price! Twin GT garrets would be the next best thing, and should net you plenty of grunt (600+hp) - although this is still going to cost a bit to do! Thing to do is to pick turbos that operate efficiently in the 18-25psi range, rather than the 10-15psi area. Make sure you talk to your supplier carefully, and if they're not helpful, find a new supplier.

yeah
gt25s can go at 20psi with no failure issues, and this is probably about the max boost I'll be running (in the forseeable future)
it's got enough top end for me (500 easily), and should have very minimal lag
plus they're also a very cool turbo, which is good considering my cooling issues

what a coincidence, i was just talking (typing) to JAZE about his twin rb20 turboed 1jz. He said he got 250rwkw @12psi and was getting redynoed soon. I reckon that is a pretty good effort! I am sure he would like to fill you in himself though.

Doesn't the 2jz come with a twin set up. Wouldn't that be an easy upgrade???

gold28: Yes they do. 1JZ is also twin turbo stock and not 2JZ (CT12B) Turbos do not fit onto a 1JZ head or manafold.

that's right
so the 2jz turbos are a pretty expensive conversion
especially condering it wouldn't be for very much more power (and I'm after 500+ horsies)

Personally I'd go for a moderately sized single turbo and not f_ck around with twins. Get a single 600hp Garrett job and you'll be set. Much less f_cking around with pipework too.

Just have to worry about lag... won't get that with smaller twins.

The general rule of thumb is that a T25 will flow for about 250hp each. So you're looking at about 500hp if that's anything to go by for you.

2x250hp turbos won't lag quite as much as a single 500hp turbo, but you better believe they will lag on a 2.5 litre engine!

to clear this up once and for all, i personally do not have 250RWKw, the guy i bought the turbos off (a friend of mine) had a dyno sheet for the JZA70 that they came off, which read 250Kw @ wheels on 12 PSI. i might mention that at this point the injectors were running 98% duty cycle which is not a good thing.
my car is currently running whatever the factory boost level for the turbos is. and one turbo is completely stuffed, there are quite a few bugs with my car currrently, but after a few drags with cars i know, im estimating that i have around 180 RWKw, and yes there is increased lag with these turbos over factory, a fair bit but they still come on around 3- 3500 and the power curve is alot more even that say a 7MGTE with CT26
the advantage with these twins is that the power is more useable (cornering ect,) ill post a link tomorow with the pics of my setup.
oh yes and dont forget twins sound cool.

I know they'll lag
but twin GT25s will come on faster than a single GT35, or even the 600bhp gt30.
the GT25s are renouned (spelling?) for their fast spool up, and that's what I'm after. good, streetable turbos.
I dont care about peak power. I'm looking for around 250rwkw, spooling up as early as possible.
from what I can tell in my research so far, the twin GT25s are a reasonable cheap and very effective way of doing this (as they can be had 2nd hand for as little as $400)

when saying that the gt25 will come on sooner than say a gt35 you have to remember you have 3 cylinders with a volume of 1.25litres feeding them into one gt25 instead of 6 cylinders totalling 2.5litres.
how would a gt25 go for sizing on a 1.3litre car?
I think a gt25 would be a good size turbo to put two of them on a 1jz personally, I'm just trying to argue it.

well, what I figure is the GT25s produce around 280hp each, and they do it at 20psi.
since they come on at around 2500rpm in an SR20 engine, I figure a pair of them should come on around 3500 on my 1jz, which is fine with me.
plus of course, you can get 2nd hand GT25s off any black top SR20-DET (which I know are a bit uncommon)... whereas no cars came out with the gt30 or gt35 from the factory, making them more expensive

also, the gt25 is a really common turbo for lancers/mirages/random rice car... so half a 1jz should be able to handle it pretty damn well

ok
should I simply say "the gt25s will cost me a lot less, net me the power I'm after, and the lag will be bearable"

Remember this too - with twin little 'uns, you could get away with the the two internal wastegates, whereas for a 650/700hp turbo you're gonna need a big bastard external one. Keep that in mind when you add up the bikkies

bah! when boost comes on you forget all about the lag, my car with the 2 skyline turbos spools up just uunder 3500 if i had twin gt25s it would spool up plenty faster.

OK....if I drive in with a stock Soarer....how much money (rough guesstamate will do) will it cost me to pull 220-230kw @ the wheels?
Exhaust...air filter...computers? I don't know what would need to be done but am interested in a drive in drive out quote.

I can't tell you how much it will cost, but you will need to upgrade the turbos so it will be a fair bit. My 2JZ-GTE made 228kw at the wheels and that's at the limit of the stock turbos. 1JZ-GTE turbos are smaller so they won't go that far.

Norbie: I say they would reach that far but only on the very edge of exploding with the force of 10 Hydrogen Bombs taking small animals with them. I should pull my finger out and measure my good one up. Norbie you should take one of your turbos (I know you want too) and measure yours up then perhaps you can confirm what the hell they are (some weird Aristo CTXX thing).

If and when I get my hands on a pair of rebuilt turbos (as mentioned by a certain ToyMods member ) then I will be able to compare my stock CT20A's to your CT12A's. There's no way I'm pulling all that crap off just to measure them though!

CT20A's??
Don't 2JZ-GTE's have CT12B's?? Are CT20A's an Aristo thing??
A friend of mine with a JZX100 (single turbo VVTi) made 220RWKW with a 3" exhaust, FMIC, Filter & 15psi(dropped to 12 after 5500rpm).
Another guy at the dyno day with a JZA80 pulled just over 250RWKW with 3" exhaust filter & 18psi.

Yes, I think CT20A's are an Aristo thing. I can't find any information about them, but they're definitely different to the Supra CT12B's.

Back to the 1jz thing tho! I was thinking of upgrading mine to the turbo teckniques (spelling?) hybrid ones. steel wheels 2 extra blades on each side and 360deg balls. app rated to over 21psi. i wanna keep itwith alot of stock performance stuff personaly so the TT hybrids and the way i'll got. differnce in lag is negligable too. so the best of both the quick spool high psi worlds. just a thought. oh i think they cost quite a bit tho.

I thought about getting mine hiflowed but were quoted $1200 per turbo.. So I thought nup I'll save up alittle more and get a GT35 instead.
They would be nice though and look stock. Just the price issue.

If you mean Turbo Technics in the UK then i've got some.. cant comment on them much as im only running them at 1bar, but i can tell you that at that boost they really deliver. 1.5 bar should be interesting ..still to do the supporting mods though.
