spelling doesn't have much to do with intelligence anyway
spelling is a matter of training, and the blame falls on the education system if people spell some words wrong
the ability to understand whats written is a much more important skill to have
computers can fix your spelling (hence the "spell check message" button next to submit reply), but they cant help you string together a constructive argument or a meaningfull sentence
as long as whats written isnt verbal trash that has no meaning, ie i can understand it, i dont really care if spelling is spelt spellnig cos i still know what it means

Actually, there is a positive correlation between spelling and intelligence (depending on how you measure 'intelligence', of course - let's not open that kettle of fish).

So what happened to one's own responsibility to maintain a high standard?

Agreed, but if every second word is incorrectly spelt and the grammar is up the putt everywhere, this may well render the writer's words unintelligible.

Like I said before, spellchecker will only check the spelling of the word and provide a range of options - ultimately it is up to the writer to choose the correct option.

my point still holds tho
if your using spell checker, and you dont know how to spell the word, but you know what it means, then you should be able to get around with no trouble
as for it being your own responsibility to maintain your spelling, if you havent learnt at school its really quite pointless learning now if you know the difference between two similar words. why do something a machine can do for you, we're human, we invent stuff to do what we dont want to.
i am not going to spend time trying to better my spelling, because i know my verbal IQ is extremley high,
i dont need to spend time learning how to spell, because its a waste of my time, and its pointless eliteism thinking that rote learning a bunch of words gives you the right to shit on people who dont know how to spell as well as you do.
however
i also agree if someone puts up a post so bad that you cant make sense of it, or there was no sense in it to being with, then your a moron. if you can speak intelligable english you should be able to write, it even if you dont spell it how Mr Macquarie and Mrs Oxford we have here would

From my understanding of verbal IQ, a person with high verbal IQ (120+, 2 SD above average, <10% population) should be able to recognise, distinguish, spell, define, associate and fluently interchange words as required. Not knowing how to spell would lead to a diminished ability to perform the other tasks - sure, the meaning may be derived from their contextual use (even if they are grossly misspelt), but that's not how the verbal component of an IQ test is generally performed (unless it's some crappy internet IQ test).
If people want to be sloppy on the internet, that's one thing. Picking on people because of it is a little elitist. However, the argument that one can possess a high verbal IQ (as classically tested) and yet not be able to spell well is flawed.

What shits me as a school teacher is the whole "bro, coz, yor, plez, somfin" I can't think of any more now but they really piss me off.
Why do people type like that?? I would find it really hard to type a normal letter or report after typing like that all the time.

exactly
and i dont think that citing internet-driven abrievited typing techniques is a vaild excuse for typing "there" when the correct word is "their" (for example)
what it does show is a poor level of basic spelling an gramatical principles in the internet population...
|
People's inability to spell, or inabilty to use correct grammar also bugs me (I tolerate the odd typo, and I have grown fond of the abbreviation process).
Ed - is that supposed to be an abbreviation of abbreviated?
If it is, then I think that you didn't save yourself much time
Now seperate the definate misuse of word's that will prolly be excepted in time (americanised) and apostrofy's being used were thay have no rite is a f#%king disgray's of owr wonderfull langwage. Nuff sed bro!
