Turbo Question
|
Sat, 19 July 2003 13:15

Does anyone use a ct20 turbo or know anything about them? Not a ct20b but a ct20. I need to know what application and when they run out off puff ( at what revs ) eg boost from 2500 to 5000 etc.
How much boost they can hold etc.

I have only ever seen one off an engine and it was a 3TGTE. From my perspective it looked pretty small (impeller and turbine). I would suspect on a 2L it would come on boost at fairly low RPM. Didnt look too good for high RPM applications. Wouldnt like to push the boost capabilities too much, as the air outlet temps would quickly skyrocket.
But as I said, I only looked at it. I don't really have any experience with one.

When I had a stock 3TGTE (except for exhaust & 12psi boost) You could really notice a lack of power from 5000rpm onwards. Outlet temps from the turbo (at 12psi) would skyrocket to over 130 degrees C !
They are not the most efficient turbo around. Really just Toyota's first attempt at a petrol turbo, and since it's derived from their deisel applications, its hardly the most successful attempt

Yep, the CT20 was on a 3T GTE and was Toyotas first attempt at a turbo.
I ran mine on my 3T GTE up to 10psi wihtout any problem. I think about 12 psi is about the limit without shortening its life too much. I know of people running them up to 18psi.
They are a small turbo and pretty laggy.
High boost wiht them = high temperature. So don't use it if you chasing more than about 200hp.
You can high flow the CT20's, but for that cash you are better off buying a better turbo.
Good luck,
Simon

From what I've seen of them on other's cars, and also having a good look at one I pulled off, I really wouldn't bother putting any $ into it - CT20B and CT26 seem to be a far better bet, if you must confine yourself to Toyota turbos!

I have one on a 4agze at 1 bar. When I ran it on a 4age it used to boost right to red line. Now on the gze the torque drops off at 5 grand. My mate thinks its the cam timing.I seem to think so too but diddnt know much about the turbo. The 3tgte is a 1.8 and I have it on a 1.6 so you'd think it would be big enough a turbo for what I need.

Gees, I wanted to throw out my 5M-E for something faster but since it is a pioneer series motor... I'll keep it knowing I have one of the pioneer technology

dont forget about multi-valve heads (in conjunction with the 4A)
u will find that toyota already played with all of these technologies before they were put into production, they ran a TT V8 powered racing car called the toyota sports 80 or something like that back in the 60's or 70's

What the 7M should have been the first motor with a stock metal head gasket (and a proper torque setting?)? (btw what was the first toyota motor with a stock metal hg?)

I'm pretty sure the first Toyota engine with a MHG was, funnily enough, the 7M-GTE's successor: the 1JZ-GTE.

The M was also Toyotas first push into mass produced overhead cam motors and also alloy head motors.
Don't forget that the Crown was the first car to have self cancelling indicators.
Also released with the M series was Toyota's first attempt at electronic overdrive. The car came with a 3 speed column shift but the box was fitted with a range of solenoids and an extension housing full of planetary gears. Depending on speed and load, the overdrive could be activated simply be depressing the accelerator pedal. At highway cruising speed, you could simply mash the loud pedal and the overdrive would kick down (much like an auto). Overtaking was a breeze. I loved mine.
M and Crown, what a combination.

I think the first twincam engine was actually the 6RG, it was made in the early 60's
