NEED HELP
|

I'm a new comer to the forum and to owning a rolla. But my family have always trusted toyota.
I own a new rolla (1ZZE-12x) and my old enemy from skool has challenged me to a duel against his SOHC capri. He's got exhaust and air filter.
I'm running the twin cam 100KW engine with TRD air and Oil filter. Standard exhaust
Without bias, do i have a chance in winning?

well i had a turbo capri boosting and blowing off behind me.. everytime i gave it he only caught up when i backed off the throttle. i didnt like the idea of being tail gated so i pulled aside and let him infront. but it took him awhile.. id slow down becuase theres a speed hump and dont give it till he got over it too so i waited gave it, and he eventualy caught up near the higher revs of my 87twinky

depends what sort of capri
if it's the crappy n/a one, you'll trash him every time.
if it's the slightly less crappy turbo one, it'll depend largely on how you both get off the line (and whether he has any mods he hasn't told you about)

The new Rollas are pretty quik for a stock n/a hatch...
Twin Cam 1.8L 100kW power... Torque is nice aswell in them and they can keep bagging all the way thru 1st and 2nd too - Brand new one from work that everyone got to thrash around...
I'm still waiting to get to thrash one of the new Sportivo's...

Dude, take notice that I said "brand new", not a customers car...
I don't thrash customers cars cause if I fuck up, then I'll be in big shit...
And by thrashing I mean driving hard, like they're supposed to be driven ...

what year capri - the old english v6 ones or the new convertable ones - the V6 would probably spank you ..
if its a newer NA one - the corolla will take it ..
if its a turbo convertable - youd have issues - they are basically a tx3 turbo motor - but only fwd - serious traction issues off the mark but once rolling in a straigth line - he's probably stomp you ..
i never underestimate TX3's - having a dad who worked on them , ive got a pretty good idea that they are a good thing till you start running too much boost/power thru the GB - thats their weakness
sounds like your buddy has the single cam , not turbo though - so id say give it a go ..

I nearly bought a KH series 2 ( the last tx3 Awd turbo ) they handle very very well for what they are and indeed do munch rexies
that is until i heard about the gearboxes .. even cosworth ones seem to break with 350 hp plus power
Then i saw Steve bignalls monster Gt4 - stock diffs - rebuilt stock GB - but with different gear ratios in it. no one i know has toasted a Gt4 gearbox yet - and i only know of 2 3sgte's going the way of the spun bearing gods ..
much better " reliability " and strength

is your car auto or manual?
basically you want to be pushing it as hard as you can without spinning the wheels. what this means in real terms is, you push it till you get slight amounts of wheelsping ('cause otherwise you dont know how close you are to spinning the wheels)
in a revvy car like the 'rolla, you want a high rpm launch with lots of clutch (as long as you dont mind treating your clutch that way)

well, on a perosnal note, I know waht double clutching is. I dont know what double shuffling is

I usually double shuffle when slowing down:
clutch in, neutral, rev, clutch in, lower gear.
Is double clutching:
clutch in, neutral, clutch again, gear?

I can understand why people double-clutch going down, watching an Best Motoring racing video, where they are hammering along the track, none of them double clutch going up gears, just heel-and-toe going down the gears.
Whats the point?

In a 'box with synchro, there isn't one...In the "old" days when non-synchro boxes were the go, you'd HAVE to double-clutch on the way down. In some trucks I've had the misfortune to drive, particularly those equipped with Road-Ranger Gearboxes, you have to double-clutch on the way up AND down...
Further, I'd suggest that the double-clutching used by racers, apart from being a "function" of the types of transmission being used, is also in large part to enable rev-matching between ratios...

Thats what I thought. Twas an old school thing, there is no advantage to double clutching going up the gears, but heel-and-toeing down, matching the revs stops the car from becoming unsettled as the synchros match the speed.

yeah, I have been practicing my heel-toeing round corners / slowing down etc to bring everything up to speed. Quite fun really. But I can't understand why you would include an extra motion when accelerating. in a take-off situation, why in the world would you go:
1st, clutch, n'tral, clutch, 2nd. => seems dumb to me.. am I wrong?

i started practicing heel and toeing about a year ago, i can't drive a manual now without doing it. especially handy when you race.
ps. friend has a s4 rx7 13bt, we took it out on some dirt roads, he did'nt really see the need for heel and toeing until now when he changed down gears without heel and toeing, it would break traction. heel and toeing makes everything nice & smooth (if you do it right).

ohhhkay back to the topic in question.
carolla vs. 10+yr old capri
i happen to own and drive a sohc non turbo capri, many of you my have seen it few years back at dynoday.
let me warn you that you may be in great danger during the race, you might accidently larf your fuk'n ass off at the capris performance, its just a joke. im not anti capri, if anything i'm all for the capris, but come on dood. realistically you are going to KEEEEEEEEEEEL this guy, practice or none. just relax, have a coke and a smile and shut that guy up. i hate people who talk all shit, man that site <maktek> is over-run with idiots. it resembles a preschool run by low vocabular, illiterate gangster rapper wanabes.
rip this guy in the race, then rip him again in a kids meal crossword puzzle at macdonalds while he tries to piece his shattered ego back together again.
all the boosted ego and shit talking can sit and swivel on this
anyway have a fun time, dont get hurt and best of luck to the capri
go baby capri go!

well for the reckord
Ive driven the newest corolla,
ive driven a turbo capri
(read flogged both)
the corolla is ALOT faster than the turbo capri.
crapi's (spelling intentional) are the biggest POS ever.
as for front wheel drive my old method of dragging was to sit at about 3500rpm at the grip point, then when the lights changed or whatever is signalling you to go, floor the accelerator while progressively letting the clutch out over about 1 second.
you will feel it when you nail it properly, should get just a tiny chirp of wheel spin and it shouldnt bog down at all.
this method works really well in a na R32 too doing it from about 4500rpm. my mate goes "whoah my car is actually fast" when i nailed it for him.
i still have no fucking idea how to launch my series 4 its gay.
