I have this book, not a bad read. I would wait and see if he does an issue 2 of it. Apparently he is driving a Soarer now.

A lot of the stuff in it is on his old GTR but is still good info.

I think that the supra photo is in teh aerodynamics section, buggered if I know why though.

actually part of toyotas marketing for the MA61 was that it had a very low drag coefficient, rivalling the porsche 911 figures.

They used the same advertising campaign for the Celica. The RA60 actually has a better Cd than the Supra. What I'm curious is as to where my car fits in!?

It has the more sloping bonnet of the MA61, yet lacks the flares and rear spoiler which increased drag on the Supra.

Porsche 944 actually Wink

I've got an ad from 83, it states the coefficient as 0.35, matching the 944.

cool
so a very high top speed should be possible (with a new gbox and diff ratio).
anyone have any knowledge of a better (read: lower) diff ratio thing (forgotten the name) that will bolt into the ma61?

Hehe, with my W58 and 3.73 diff my car will have a theoretical 290kph+ top speed...I think thats more than enough.

The 1G I'd estimate to have the torque to get it to aroyund 250kkph, but probably not much more.

What makes you think you'll runout of stem at 230 ??

what rear gears do you have?, with r154 and 4.1 gears my 1j has seen an easy 250 and it had heaps left, the auto i was driving with topped over 260 before the auto overheated and started slipping. All measured by gps.

you'll do an easy 250+

matt

w58, with whatever is standard (4.11 I think?)

I dunno, I just looked at the JZA80 n/a top speed (220) and figured mine would have a little more

I saw 238km/h in my Supra just before redline in 5th, and that's with a W58 and 4.1:1 diff ratio. The 1JZ has more revs to play with so you'd probably hit 250. Seriously, how often would you want to go faster than that??

FWIW I'm planning to buy an RA65 diff as soon as I can find one, and swap the 3.5:1 gearset into my diff. That should give me a theoretical top speed around the 300km/h mark! I'm not doing it for the top speed though, I just want a more relaxed highway cruiser.

that's waht I'm after. a few less revs at 110, as I drive down to melb a few times a year, and other places that involve an hour or 2 of 110

Well like I said, RA65's have a 3.5:1 F series diff. All you have to do is swap the R&P into your diff and you'll have a lazy highway cruiser on your hands. Acceleration off the line may be slightly diminished, unless (like me) you have way too much power and first gear is nothing but wheelspin!

Oooh, exactly what I need...

How much do you reckon this is going to end up setting you back? I would assume you'd have to get the speedo recalibrated or something similar?

FWIW I've seen around the 215kph mark in 5th with around 2k rpm to go. Thats with a 3.9:1 diff

Edit: spelling, duh

I haven't priced an RA65 diff (still haven't found one at the wreckers) but I would guess around the $200 mark for a complete unit. You will need to change the speedo drive gear inside the gearbox if you want the speedo to read accurately. You can either grab the drive gears out of an RA65 box, or find out what ratio they are and buy new ones from Toyota.

Cheers mate.

I'll have to start scouring the wreckers.
