Hi guys,

Having just purchased a 1992 Celica GT4 (last night), I am now wanting to start with some bolt on mods to get some power out of it.

I'm looking to do the Exhaust - 3" from the turbo back.

Pod filter and a boost controller.

The car needs a little work, I'll be getting TruTrack to check the suspension out and will look to replace that ASAP, then need more power.

Can anyone recommend good workshops in Melbourne who I can check out? Prefer places that a familar with the 3S-GTE. Also exhaust shops to consider.

Cheers

Aussie Exhaust is THE place to go for GT4 exhausts.

See their online store at http://vs84208.server-store.com/store/products/cat egory1.inetstore

Talk to Russell there. He fit my exhaust and did a great job. Its not cheap, but the quality is excellent. And its Australian owned and made.

The pod filter is questionable. For this level of mods, you are probably better off going for a K&N style drop-in panel filter and fit some cold air ducting to the standard airbox.
The GT4 has REALLY high underbonnet temps, so a pod style filter will suck this hot air in and you will lose power.

With the boost controller, any manual one will do for around $85 or so. Remember to cap off the TurboVSV hose, or the ECU will sense something amiss and bleed off (via the VSV) a heap of your boost. Remember also that the VSV acts as a safety measure, limiting boost when the conditions are not perfect. So drive a little smarter (no full boost when cold etc) and there should be no problems. Keep the boost under around 12psi as this is where the factory ECU has fuel maps up to. If you want to hit 15psi you may have to install additional fuelling via a new ECU or piggyback addon. Remember fuel cut comes in at around 12psi as well, so you *may* need to disable that. Its an easy mod which costs around $1 to do. Search the web, the info is out there Smile

Whiteline should be the people to sort out your suspension for you. They sell a completely developed kit for the GT4, so you know its going to work well. Other suspension places with no GT4 experience probably will make things worse! Razz

Hope this helps.

I second what Danny and Spectral have said, install a boost guage ASAP, and try Whiteline for some good suspension mods.
Aussie Exhausts can sell you a 3inch downpipe that bolts straight
on to your car. Do this first if $$$ are tight, and then tackle the rest of the exhaust system after that. Look at gutting the cat, and then maybe relocating it further down the exhaust system at a later stage. It greatly increases underbody temps. Whatever a pod filter might gain for you, you will loose in the hotter air it sucks in, in the engine bay, a k&n panel filter is better. A manual boost control is a good start, but an EBC is better, allowing you to dial down the boost from the cockpit, in normal driving. You will need to fit a fuel cut defender once you dial the boost up.
Check out 'allwheelmotion' and 'alltrac' on the net for other ideas.
Nice car - great choice.
Cheers,
Mitch.

HA and dont ask danny how to do it !! ( pokes danny in a HAR HAR way )

boost guage is essential - i can give you a quick spin on how to install a Speco one as i did this a month ago and the pain and cuts on my hands are still fresh Smile though it DOES work - and the stock ECU is good for 14psi with the other tinkering mods i have !

my gt4 runs a maximum 14psi boost and very comfortably with an aftermarket simple boost controller that i can adjust from the cabin and a little tweak to the fuel pressure fuse, and a cat back exhaust ( nothing special but sounds nice ) - otherwise she's basically stock - and is currently holding top st185 Gt4 that's listed as a toymods dyno day competitor ( UNTIL Anhar and danny get theirs on the road - BOO ! and only beaten by two ST205 WRC's on the day though dave's not that far off beating me too!) so if you want any details on how far you can go with bolt on stuff and still get good performance from it - ask away - Im in the process of getting every possible thing i can think donr to the car without having to pull apart the motor OR swap the ECU

Ill be focussining on suspension + tyres wheels in the next month - followed by exhaust and turbo rebuilds (52mm wheel on the way just need the other one! )- highflow here i come ! )

Re filter - give the pod the arse and utilise some home grown nutting skills to create cold air induction into the airbox you already have and utilise a decent panel filter - this by far would be the easiest to do + you dont get that nasty underbonnet heat issues ( ill be doing the cold air induction the first chance i get when i come home !!! theres 3+ more KW in that muahaha )

Exhaust for EVERYTHING dump pipe - piping, high flow cat ( you need one ) and mufflers - instaled - your looking at about 1600 ish dollars - this is what i was recently quotedas an estimate of the 3 inch straight thru system i want ..

The suspension side of things - you cant beat the whiteline " handling " pack for goodness - they retail for about 1500 + installation and solve most of the Gt4's handling woes + from what ive heard REALLY makes a difference in aiding the cars handling

Brakes are pretty good off the mark - though if you want more power - a set of DBA slotteds up front and decent pads shouldnt cost more than about 500 for the lot - OR you could try adapting a set of 4 pot calipers and 205 rotors - but honestly i have no idea on the $$'s involved here

Also - GET A TURBO TIMER!!!! its a !must!must! to help prolong turbo life

Anyway

ive rambled enough - if i think of anything else - or if you have any questions - fire away - im new to this too - and the guys here who already have them are SUPER handy for info Smile

Oh - BTW - if you find a good way of funding all these mods - let me know ? PLEASE ?? Rolling Eyes

Ye gads - and i havent even rebuilt the motor or got my st205 gearbox yet - ARRGGHH!

Oh the pain of car modifications

I did forget one thing - IF you can get your hands on a group a bumper - GET IT GET IT NOW!! it has more ducty type space for radiator cooling - and looks OH so much cooler .. Only hassle is - i have got the last Two new reamining ones in victoria - SO you might have to wait a month to get one ex japan !

you also need the group a Stle mounting bar - also ex japan - UNLESS your lucky enough to find a Carlos sainz Gt4 being parted

Stuart,
Thanks for chiming in. I will put my hand up. Can you tell us how you installed the Speco boost gauge and give us a nice digi pic of the face of the thing and where you have fitted it inside the cabin Smile
And....what EBC do you have ?
And....how did you 'tweak' the fuel pump relay/fuse to run at 12v full-time rather than drop to 9v in low boost situations ?
The Whiteline gear is a pretty good package, but you will find the spring rates on the soft side if you are wanting to do some serious and regular track work, on the road they are fine. The caster/anti-lift kit is excellent and helps dial out almost all of the front end push (understeer) when you bang the power down through or on the exit of corners.
Does a 3 inch system fit where the standard system resides, all the way through the car ?
On the 185, is fuel cut at 14psi, exactly where the ECU is mapped up to ?
Thanks for all your info mate.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Ok, I forgot to mention it already has a boost gauge.

Have been to TruTrack and will be getting some suspension mods. Getting Koni adjustables front and rear. Will use the stock springs as they seem to be pretty good (and I don't want to lower the car at all). All the bushes are pretty much stuffed so Nolathene bushes all round. Also need to replace the rack (ouch).

I'm getting the exhaust done tomorrow. Nothing flash at this stage, just a straight through 3" from the turbo back. $550 from my local exhaust shop (using pipe and pre-made mandrel bends.

Things are getting out of hand, the wheels are stuffed so they failed RWC. So new 17's are needed. This has affected my budget. Hence the cheap exhaust as an interim measure.

After all this I reckon the car will be running sweet.
