Win200 help needed Fri, 15 August 2003 11:03 Go to next message
Hi all
been trying to fix my parent's comp. Win2000 with service pak 2, has been acting up lately After a while of using Iexplorer (ver6), "svchost.exe" will crash, and after that, copying & pasting text does not work, nor will links open in new windows. Also, the dialup stuff would act up, not letting you connect or disconnect. 'repairing' IE6 did not fix, it doesn't seem to be Ie itself.

I reinstalled Win2000 (not clean install, chose 'upgrade' so I wouldnt have to reinstall all the software), it ran great for a while with IE 5 but then did it again after 5 or 10 mins!

I noticed that svchost.exe... whatever it is... was using 2megs of mem according to task manager after the reinstall, but before the reinstall was 8, and after reinstall and stuffing up again, was about 4 I think.

Any ideas? Virus? If so, can anyone recommend a free virusscanner?
thanks!
Stefan

thanks guys
I heard the new worm just caused constant reboots, but then someone else told me it 'disrupts all forms of internet comunication', which sounds a lot like what is happening.
Thanks!

You've got a virus called Windows on your machine. Real hard to get rid of. Go here for a utility to clean it off your machine.

hehehe

Yeah, you really want to have the service pack 3 now. The only problem is, it's pretty big 157mb. Sad

I'd like to see people patch their systems with that when they're connected through a modem with an ISP who has a 2 hour cut out limit...
