a friend of mine bought his first car the other day and he has become a huge pain in the ass with ensurance and defects etc...
the car he bought has a pod filter extractors and an exhaust.
Now he is telling me that he can get defected by simply having a pod filter. anyone know if this is true or not?

Yes, it is unless you have an emission test proving it still complies with the ADR's

depends on the cars age and the ADR's it is meant to comply with.
if it has emissions ADRs, as johnny said, you have to prove it is ok. if you are meant to have a cat, it better be there, if it's loud, you have to prove it is quiet enough.
what car is it?
maybe go talk to an engineer about it, and see if what he has must be certified, or if it is not legal. best way to find out
oh, and driving nicely also reduces defects by a drastic %
good luck, Stewart

generally you wont get defects unless your driving style warrants it (ie, you're on a car cruise, or driving loudy/stupidly)

Yes, you can get defected baiscly be changing anything on your car to nonstandard. (that might be a bit of an exageration, but not far from the truth).
Best way to avoind defects and still get insurance, is talk to your states department of transport, find out whats legal, whats not, and what you have to do to get the go faster bits complied and passed.
It costs money, but its better than being defected, or have your insurance not pay up in case of an accident.
and like the previous posters said, not driving like an idiot also helps.
Craig.
