hard to start ma61

my ma61 takes a while to get going
it always starts,
but it requires me to crank it over for a while, it doesnt just start up after a few cranks
is this just the norm for old cars, and just forget about it?
is there anything i can do, replace something to make it good?
i dont really care that much and not really worth spending much on, its just annoying, thats all.

I don't know if the 5M-E isn't fitted with a fuel regulator on the fuel rail but if it is fitted with one, that may be your trouble since the petrol is going back into the tank after at rest (happened to a friends VN V6).
Or if it cold, is your Air Bypass Valve working properly? Had a cranking problem in the mornings and couldn't idle properly and found out it was the valve...
Hope it helps.
Cheers.

Yeah I'm betting on a stuffed ABV....
Am I right in thinking that it starts fine after its been run for a bit, or does it do it all the time? (If so it sounds like the ABV)

Clogged cold start injector? Or could just be not working...
Personally I prefer it to crank a few times before it fires, gives time for oil to be sent up to the cam etc. I've actually disconnected the CSI on my 7m-gte so it does this.
New cars seem to do this as standard these days. My dad's vr commo is like this and so is my gf's my99 wrx. Cranks 2-3 times before it fires up.

Could be a combination I guess. Worth checking it all out anyway.. Dunno how easy it would be to get to the CSI, the 7m one is a pain in the arse to get to

Yeah, my CS injector was pretty stuffed, its an easy job to see if its clogged by the way, rip it out of the inlet manifold (its only two screws) and plug the manifold with a rag etc. Then place the injector so it sprays into a jar and get someone to crank the motor over for you, it should spray a fair amount of petrol into the jar in a nice spray, not dribble...
Anyway I replaced mine with one that did work nicely and its still got the same problem..
Best of luck..

cool thanks guys,
ill have a look at the abv and the csi soon
and also,
haynes manual refers to "air valve", im guessing this is the same as thing the abv (thing above the cam cover with a few hoses coming out of it)

Hey All,
I said it could have been the Air Bypass Valve as well!
Anyway, Wilbo, how did you get your engine to look clean and shiny as that?
Cheers...

Lol take one boring holiday, add lots of time....!
I knida did it in stages, first I just cleaned the engine bay with degreaser / rag / water, then when it looked clean I started polishing the aluminium stuff with "mother Al and mag polish". Next plan is to do the wheels when I have time
I've had another go at the tappet cover since that pic, but I think I'll need to get a buffing wheel or something else to get it looking much better....(oh yeah I took the tappet cover off and sanded it etc).
BTW if you go looking for an ABV find one for me too lol
Cheers
