anyone heard of this? --- Very lucky... Thu, 11 September 2003 23:32 Go to next message
Last night i was driving around on this road that i always take a short cut through.. its in the middle of no where and this was late Ive got it sideways a fair bit and ive gone to countersteer and i was met with this clunk sound....

anyway... at this point im without steering and heading towards a tree... ive hit the picks.. locked em up and managed to stop and avoid everything. I reversed and then drove up the road under a light and had a look.

I managed to snap the steering column! i dont know about anyone else but i have NEVER heard of a steering coloum breaking in ANY car!

Sad

I have seen this happen, but it was the result of hitting a tree that left the car very 2nd hand, and the driver in hospital!

Go buy a lotto ticket!!

Is it just me, or does that look like it's been welded at some point?

(If it has, and the weld was dodgy, that would always be a potential point of failure... Sad )

I had this happen to me in my old TF Cortina. Was doing the same thing, no steering almost hit a stoby pole. Clunk noise as well.

Very scary without steering.

yep it does doesnt it... scary thing is that its an OEM weld... and a poor one at that

it turns out its a manufacturing defect.

its not a part on the car that i would expect to fail!

having just put new shocks and brakes on the car the day before,.. i initially thought something of mine failed.. but it turns out to be this!

its lucky it wasnt on a fast windying road or something...

but yeah.. i've ripped the shaft out.. just need to find another column

Closest thing like that to happen to me is a ball joint fell out of the lower control arm not very nice at 100km/h around a corner.
