icon5.gif  Newbie question? Tue, 16 September 2003 23:48 Go to next message
I have an ra23 celica with an 18rg in it atm...

I killed the 18rg and am in need of a cheap replacement while I save for my project *SHHHH* Razz

My mechanic *because I don't have time to sort the engine out myself* has suggested that I go an 18rc or a 21t? Which I think he means a 2tg but not sure?

Can anyone tell me the major differences between an 18rc and an 18rg?

Also if the 21t engine even exists? *I'm not too keen on the 2tg BAH to a 1600 Razz I like my 2ltr* Razz

Thanks in advance Smile

There is a 21R if that is what he means.

maybe he meant 21R? afaik there's 18R, 20R, 21R, 22R etc... truck motors.. like hiluxes and stuff.

as for 18RC and 18RG, go for a goolge first. RG has a really wide head, so i'm assuming it's a twin cam??

yeap, the RC is a boat anchor, so don't bother. Find an RG or a 2tg. Preferably an RG as it would be the easiest swap in if you already had one before.

Yeah, he would've meant a 21R-C from an RA60.

Stewart, 18R-G is a twincam. Nice engine. It's the pick of the R-series bunch.

2tg - 1600 over a 2ltr? *2tg good???*

for a daily driver *not my racer* would an 18rc suit?

Knowing that my celica is my project car and there is another engine swap planned soon as I've saved up enough to pay for it?

The aim:

3sgte < 300hp at wheels
Big big brakes
off white leather interior
Custom dash....

mmmm damn I'm off dreaming again Smile

Its a work in progress but I need to drive it atm Smile

Just grab the cheapest R-series carby engine you can find. Smile

That means anything that doesn't have an 'E' in the engine code, so stay away from the 18R-GEU and 22R-E.

so an 18rc should be cool for a daily driver Smile

I'll go with that while I save for the 3s Smile

Cheers all Smile

*damn I love this place*

Answers come so easily Smile

ooh while I think of it:

anyone know if the 18rc is gonna bolt straight in with my existing exhaust / extractors?

It will bolt straight in as it was actually the original engine that comes in your car when it is new. I am pretty sure that the extractors would also fit although i'm not 100% sure.

The 18RC is basicly a crappy single cam version of the 18RG. Quite gutless but it should be right while you save for your next conversion. You do realise that a 3SGTE conversion would cost a bloody lot to complete and get it running on the road!

I've costed the whole conversion for the 3sgte Razz

*I nearly died when I saw it*

but should make a good conversion.

Most of it I'm going to be doing myself with the help of some friends Smile

WHoot gotta love projects Razz

*When you all say the 18rc is gutless -- does that mean no more 200kph flybys with my ra23?*

Very Happy

actually the 18RC does have a high top speed! well for a boat ancor anyway. I had my RA40 up to 180kmph a couple of times, it just took a while to get that fast Smile I think they were 100hp or so stock. Depending what version of the 18RG you had, it could have been anywhere from 120hp - 145hp so you'll definately notice the difference.

18RCs are cheep though! i quite often see them in my local news paper in the free addvertisements for items under $50.

good luck with the 3sgte conversion Smile should be bloody quick when it's done!

3S-GTE wouldn't be the conversion of choice for your first conversion!! It's DAMN difficult!

Why not try a 1G on for size first? Better bang for your buck. You only have to save up for half the time and it's a MUCH easier conversion.

Well Nark -->

had considered other engines, a friend bought me a half cut of an MR2 so I already have the 3sgte *I just can't put it in till I pay for it* Razz

And I'm a big fan of the 3sgte motor --> big power available Smile

because of the HP I want to achieve I figured a 3s would be the best choice too - plus being fairly new should have a longer 'parts available' time *aftermarket parts that is not standard* Razz

but then I'm also quite partial to the 1g, 1j, and 2j as well Smile

the other main aim that I want ==> to smoke my friends supercharged commonwhore without even batting an eyelid Smile

whoot Razz

If you're using an 18R-C, try to get one from an RA23 is that will be a direct fit (obviously). HOWEVER, the exhaust manifold is quite different to the 18R-G so you can't use your extractors. You'll probably have to have your exhaust modified to suit as well.

Damn.

That's gonna put my costs up again --> eep.

Might see if my mechanic can source me an 18rg then Razz

saves doing all the extra work right now Smile

Cheers Norbie Smile

Nark - I like that 'dunnydoor' --> like it very much.
