for some unknown reason my car keeps zapping me when i get out and touch the door. It has only been doing it for the past 2 weeks and it is really pissing me off! some times it nearly hurts it gets me that good. I have no idea what is causing it because i havn't played with anything for a long time. As far as non standard electrical things go, I have a cd player, amp & an alarm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

did you start wearing different shoes in the last 2 weeks??
sometimes you can avoid the static zap by putting your feet on the ground when you get out, while still holding the door, then close the door, with the other hand....i think that works??

This happens to me to!!! so fucking annoying. Its been happening to me for ages. Like 4months. The small zaps I can handle but sometimes I get some big fuckers.
The way i avoid it is by closing the door with the window.

You must have your car raised to the max if you can easily see it when fitted underneath

Its a weird one alright.. my 'expensive' cars such as all the supras i've had over the years dont do it. But all the cheap crappy cars (Fords, Toyota Avensis, Renault etc) all do it.
I've found the bext way to avoid it is clench your fist and tap the bottom of your hand on the roof. You still get the discharge but its over a large area and you dont feel it at all (although you will look a bit odd every time you get out of your car and tap the roof like you love it).
Dont get out and avoid touching the car, you'll just get the shock from something else when you go inside the house.

This means the build quality is not too good! ie the pannels are not earthed the way they should be!

You believe what you will, but I can tell you now that having leather seats isn't going to earth out your body panels

Its not the body panels that cause the problem, its the way the charge is generated in the first place.
The static (which is what the spark is, im sure i dont need to tell you that though) is generated in your body and clothes due to the friction when you get out of your car or when youre driving. If you slide out of nylon seats when you get out of your car, or your feet are moving around on nylon/polyester carpet when youre driving then thats when the charge is built up.
Only certain materials build up the charge. Wool doesnt (well not much anyway), neither does leather.
So, if you've got wool or leather materials in the seats and carpets, you cant get the charge in the first place, and you cant get zapped. Make sense?
That's why you *will* get zapped on the cheaper cars, as they tend to use more man made fibres in seats and carpets, which increase the chance of the charge building up.

Sorry I must be mistaken, the dry air and winds blowing accross the car doesnt cause static!!
Ok thats clear, i'm sorry

I'm sure it does.. but that gets discharged in the body of the car pretty much instantly doesnt it?

If your body panels are not earthed how can your body discharge on them? Most "expensive" cars dont have all the body panels earthed, like door skins and guards! For example the door skins are normally glued on and the guards are normally insulated! This is why dont get zapped on these cars, this is also the main cause of corrosion and rust!

HedgehogSandwich wrote on Fri, 17 October 2003 22:55 | 2. Havent you got your cheap and expnsive mixed up? Surely all the cheap cars panels are glued together rather than the expensive ones.
|
No. The so called cheap cars have the door skins welded and the guards bolted directly on.
The "expensive" cars use glue to try and stop vibrations! These expensive car manufactures dont care about build quality or how long the car will last, they just want the car to sound good on the show room floor!

heh heh, i went to a seminar by a guy from the UK (Rudd) who specialises in automotive composites...
an example was the Aston Martin "Vanquish" (iirc)
aluminium space frame, 1 piece carbon fibre trans tunnel (thats one big sheet of CF!!) etc etc.
all the structural parts are either aluminium or carbon fibre/epoxy, and the non-structural parts are GRP. the composite panels are glued to the aluminium frame...
gluing can actually be much stronger and give more rigidity than having spot welds every few inches on the bendy edges of sheet metal panels...
as for zapping, if you have fluffy polyester seat covers (like i do for rego time) and you slide in and out wearing cotton or synthetics.. oh man... ZAAAAAAAP!!! but with just the plain silvia seats, no zaps at all!! i vote for the clothing zap.. wearing anything new recently??
then again, when air humidity is low for a while, thing start charging up, simply cos the surface static that is on everything doesn't dissipate via air moisture...
take it like a man dammit

Build up of static works in a number of the ways already mentioned. The key to your problem (and a lot of other people's) is the difference between the charge build up on yourself and on the body of the car. This becomes more noticeble in dry weather periods because the air is more highly charged and less of the car's static charge is able to dissipate via the air. It's hard to put your foot on the ground first when you're getting out of the car so as has been said, open the door and use the back of your hand to push the door open. There are a lot less nerves there to get affected by the zap. Try it, it works. After a while you'll get in the habit of doing it automatically. Oh ... if it's really bad put on an anti-static strap but make sure you attach it to a part of the car that is earthed to the body, not on a plastic bumper bar or something similar as some brightsparks do.
