how long to remove an exhaust?
|

ok, I got the towie coming tomorrow morning, but I want to pull the exhaust before he takes it so it doesnt get damaged.
how long do you reckon it'd take 1 guy to remove a 1-piece 3" exhaust system? (just figure Ill un-bolt it from the turbo and go from there)
plus, how hard will this be? Ive never tried to access the bottom of my turbos before, so I have nfi how much of a pain in the arse this will be
Cheers

Based upon removing mikes system
MASSIVE PITA!
Took us no time to remove the back section, although 2 people will help the situation greatly, but it took over an hour to remove the dumps. Welded on with heat!

all I have to say to 15 mins is BS
apart from almost everything on the 1j turbos being completely inaccessable, all of the bolts were nicely stuck in place.
towie did a good job anyhow, got the whole thing on and off the truck with no damage (even tho the front wheels turn wherever they felt like going)

I suppose 15 minutes mighten be BS. Depends on exhaust, motor, equiptment acessible to etc. etc. Just because yours took longer than 15 it doesnt mean it is BS....true?

yeh for sure it would make a diff..
i know that i can rip off the stock ma61 system in about 10mins, providing its already on jackstands,
...but a 1j system with dumps etc. would take longer wouldnt it?

It depends how the exhaust is constructed. Mine has a flange at the end of the dump pipe which makes it piss-easy to remove. Just undo two bolts, then unhook the rubber mounts and the whole thing drops out.

If you have a 9" angle grinder, our record is about 30 seconds.

as I mentioned, its a 1-piece
nothing easy to remove, have to unbold it from the turbos
which in themselves are specially constructed to require a contortionist to remove or access in any way

so i guess now is a good time to insert one flange at the end of the dump pupe and another just before it climbs over the diff?
or has it gone to the great toyota garage in the sky?

flanges are your friend!!!!
i have one just in front of the axle, one just after the exit from the engine bay, so there are no mig complex shapes, and i can pull each bit off easily. sucks having to out the car up on stands or a hoist just to drop an exhaust, and still having to 'untangle' it from the car....
go flange , go flange!!
you won;t ever regret having an easily removable exhaust

Agree with Stewart 100%. I have 2 flanges in exactly the same spots. Makes life so easy for engine fitment or dropping a gearbox.
