quick question:
is it possible to take the sliding part off a standard aus.spec sprinter seat rail without permanently damaging it (i.e. the bottom half of the rail)?
if so, how?

The bottom piece of my rail was completely bent and had a ball bearing missing out of the centre. Tried to get it off but without drilling off the weld points I dont think so.
Tried myself and stuffed it up totally. Ended up getting a new bracket off a RA60 Celica and refitting that. The new bracket was slightly too wide so I drilled out a bit more of the hole and washered it back onto the body.

yes it is.
remove the entire rail, runner and holder, from the seat.
Drill out the little "bumps" at either end, which act as a stopper. Now with a little effort you should be able to slide the roller bearing+housing out of each end and thus remove the runner from the rail.
If you still wish to use the rail, then simply put a bolt where you drilled out the stoppers.
