"wilkins performance engines" can make a custom organic gasket with steel fire rings, in most thicknesses, for $300...

Ridgecrest do copper gaskets in a variety of thicknesses. I'm not sure how thin you'd have to go to get an appreciable increase in compression though...

There is also a manufacturer in Adelaide of Copper HG's, and they just quoted me $110 for the gasket.
From what my search and learn mission just uncovered is that unless you are running bags of boost, an original gasket + good head surface + ARP Studs/bolts + the right torque, and all else being equal, things should be sweet.
This is probably the route I will be heading in the near future.
I can get a spare head from a 7M-GE from a DIY wreckers for $83 and the idea would be to slowly rebuild (clean, valve job, stem seals etc as budget allows) and then replace in a weekend.
Are the GE and GTE cams and valves the same ?
Cheers

He's referring to the pig skin head gasket
I'd say the GE cams are different from the GTE cams.
