icon4.gif  MA70 on Gas?? Thu, 13 November 2003 12:58 Go to next message
Im looking into buying a mk3 supra next month, but me being a poor bastard, i am planning to put it on gas, i know gas research would be the best option, but im not sure on prices for that. But if running dual fuel would there be any problems with turbo engines, like would it run ok, not stuff the turbo, loss alot of power etc. Any input would be helpful.

Also on a sidenote, i have seen some supra's with the 2.0 tt, i assume this engine is the 1g gte, just wondering what performance is like with this engine in the mk3, and would they go hard with some mods. Or would it be more wise to stick with the 7M GTE. Thanks

So you want to throw out the sophisticated EFI system and replace it with a 50's-tech gas carby? Dim!!

If you want fuel economy, don't buy a Supra in the first place! Maybe a Corolla would suit your needs better?

gas. if you're doing it for cheaper running don't bother in a few months they're putting additional tax on LPG which will see it the same price as petrol.

average gas conversion will set you back $2k. it can be done for much less, but, with legal implications. it won't be plated for one and any gas installer you go to will be extremely hesitant on plating it unless he pulls the whole lot and re-installs.

and yes gas research is the stuff to have. my 4AGE has it now.

re: dual fuel on a turbo, i kinda shudder to think about this, not a great fan of dual fuel setups, i don't see gas wrecking your turbo no. you will lose power if you go dual fuel, as, your computer will be tuned for petrol and not LPG - with LPG you can throw a HEAP of advance at it (even with turbo!)

Hmmm. I wouldnt recommend it personally. I dont think you would save enough money to make up for the $2k you spend getting it installed. The 7mgte doesnt have all that bad mileage anyway (mine gets 12.9). So the costs wouldnt be huge.

in the case of an MA70 LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! LPG is fine to replace a crappy m-eu efi system or if you need to get around emmisions reg's and maybe if you need to increase the range by adding an extra tank otherwise not worth the effort

Thinking about it, i really want a mk3, but maybe in a couple of years when i can afford to run the thing on petrol. I have decided to get a commodore and put that on gas.

Or even an old 2nd hand mr2. Nice little cars. Smile But if you want more than 2 seats, the 89 corolla is a nice little package and VERY good fuel economy.

To be honest, right now i have a 1.6 escort, it doesnt use much fuel, but i want something with more power. And i know that with more power comes more fuel use. But our family vs commodore is on dual fuel and it doesnt use that much gas. Full tank would last a week, so $20 a week to fill the tank for something with more power i can live with that

Well, I personally think gas is a decent way to go.

I've got my 1g-gte running on straight gas with a single turbo conversion, aftermarket haltech IG5 ignition only ECU and it seems to run really well. The other bonus is, the way I have it setup, there'll be no need to upgrade the fuel system, there's two fifths of fuck all chance I'll ever get up to the power figures where the converters will give up the ghost.

As said before, you can run heaps of advance with gas, and the only downside with a turbo is, LPG puts out less exhaust gas, which means it introduces a bit of turbo lag into the system. But with a properly setup system, it shouldn't be a problem, becuase you just engineer it in such a way that it will spool up earlier.

And as for gas research equipment, you'd be looking at $2500 for a tank, lines, 2 converters, a carbi and all the associated wiring, including installation and tuning.

Anyhow, my 2c.

$2500 for a straight gas conversion, bit too much to be honest. I dont know what i was thinking when i said im gonna get a commodore, im back to my senses in saying im certainly gonna buy a mk3 supra, run it standard, and see what happens, i should be able to afford fuel.

Ive seen a 91' mk3 supra jza70 R for sale for $10k thought it was a good price. 230kw, auto, 135,000 kms.

p.s ChaserJZX100 is really a cross dressing prostitute, so watch out fella's Smile
