Are the exactly the same? I'm guessing so, but due to my inexperience, being only 19 and all, I don't really know.
I'm asking so that I can do all the research into 3s-ge to 3s-gte conversions before I'm off my P's. Save up and do it as quickly as possible. Also would $300 be roughly the right figure for getting the loom wired in professionally?
Any help is greatly appreciated

Dont' think the would be exactly, I would guess the 5sfe trans (ie. st184 and st204) would be slightly better and a little... little stronger than using the old 3sge trans from an st162. Draza might know, he's using a camry gearbox on a 3sgte, he might be able to tell you how they go.
I just finished that conversion on mine. If you plan on doing it yourself, you will be spending a lot, and I do mean lot of time on it, if you pay someone you will be spending a lot and I do mean lot of money on it. Either way it's your call.
I was quoted about $650 so I did it myself.

there are quiute a number of s series trannies.
s50, s51, s52, s53, s54
s53 & 54 common in aus.
main differences between the above two boxes - depending on which car they come out of, they will have wither a 3.6 or a 3.2:1 1st gear, and either a 3.9 (most common) or a 4.1:1 diff.
in the box i have put together for my aw11/3sge is a s54 - it has the 3.2 1st, 4.1 final drive, and a lsd!! you have to know where to find all the parts to build one though!!!
