Very little torque down low in the rev range, have to gun it past 6000 rpm for the VVTLi to engage and then she sings to the red line. Great power and performance for a 1.8L but I would not fit it to anything heavier than say 1200kg.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Hmmmmm I have actually heard this also, that the 2ZZ is too "lifeless" below 6k, when they compared the celica to the ITR DC2R ( the old shape ITR). In saying that, it was quite a smooth engine though when I jumped in a Sportivo...... I think the 2ZZ is a more refined engine than the B series engines in the old ITRs, then again the B series design was already 10 years old when the 2ZZ came out. But yeah for a performance engine, it seemed too sedate, from a few aspects of torque throughout the RPM range (not much down low),and also from an acoustic point of view.
For the "fun factor" of driving I would have to say that nothing compares to the B series engines, more so the little 1.6 B16's found in Australia in the 3rd Gen CRX and EK Vti-Rs. I say this cause the activation of Vtec is so pronounced in the B16, (read: BIG jump in cam profile), compared to the ITR's more linear shift to Vtec.

I dont want to put it into anything Im thinking of getting the Sportivo mid next year and I was wondering if the motor is strong enough to handle either a turbo or supercharger without strengthening, and wether a supercharger or a turbo would be a worthwile conversion.

I have almost no doubt that an ITR would flog a sportivo corolla down the strip. Despite its high amx power rating I think the corolla struggles to do 0-100 in less than 9 seconds.

Well I can tell you that over a 1000 Meter run dont ask me why its over 1000 Metres instead of a 1/4 mile but it is the Integra Type R beats the Sportivo by .5 of a second
Type R 27.7 Sec and the sportivo gets 28.2 Sec!!

well.. the celica as far as im concerned has a HOOGE jump in power above 6k.. take on a whole other note.. But really.. who the fuck is gonna drive around at 6k rpm.. hmmm.. NO ONE!!.. hence why turbo;s and superchargers where invented!!?!?!?!?!!

I still have my doubts about this, but anyway........
Dude have a look at HKS... I know they make S/C kit for the 1.5 Vitz = Sportivo Echo here in Oz, so they may have a low psi system for the Celica that I beleive would be pretty much the same ease fitting it to the Corolla.
Hope this helps!
BTW: Were are yo quoting those figures from??

hey the redline is at 8200 in the sportivos but it seems to cut out at 8000 most of the time. They do the 0-100 in about 8.4 sec but now that mines nice and worn in i reckon on a cool day it would be a bit quicker than that

the levin goes for around the 29k mark, and the sportivo is 30k.
a grand for leather, and 41kw....but you lose side airbags, and some other bits and pieces, in the interest of trimming the fat...

so what's the weight difference.. because the celica does 0-100 in 6.8 seconds (from the toyota site) or is it just because of better/lower gearing?

I have a 2zz-ge celica :) its quite a nice car, and i wouldnt describe it as "lifeless" below 6000 rpm. 2-3000 rpm torque is rather average, but above that it goes quite well, then theres a kick once the vvl kicks in.
The celica is 1112 kg and the corolla is 1224kg, so i guess thats the difference in the 0 - 100 times despite the corolla having extra power, but i think its only a 1 kilowatt difference. According to australian toyota site the celica has 140 kw and someone mentioned that the sportivo has 141. Its hard to find accurate figures on the celica it seems. US spec ones are a bit different since they use lower grade fuel over there. Ive seen listed 0 - 100's of anything from 7.2 - 6.6 for the celica.
As for supercharging, i believe toyota is releasing one for the corolla as part of the TRD accessory line. They had it on show at one of the recent motor shows. I think its designed for corolla, echo and matiz?
There are a couple of manufacturers that make turbo kits, they run with about 7 psi boost. Im not too sure how strong the engine would be for forced induction, so i think pressures are generally quite low in these add ons.

I got suspicions about the 2ZZGE!!
I dont know if any of you went to the car show in Darling Harbour 2000 just before the celica came out.
But there they had 148KW for the celica and they had a little video showing the Celica on the 1/4 Mile and showing the time as 15.6 or something like that. Then it comes out to Australia and its only 140KW and does like 16s on the 1/4 Mile!!
Is it possible that for some reason they are slightly detuned?

I got my doubts too..... I think Toyota are telling fibs again with reguard to power output!
So by the looks of things Attention Seca... that little Greek mag you where reading is not accurate... the ITR would rip the celica and the Corolla a new asshole. By roughly about 1 sec, very long time down the quarter.
And I thought it was the other way around..... I thought the corolla was lighter than the celica?

It used to be. I think toyota put a decent effort into the latest celica to cut the weight out. I don't really know but it may have been an effort to reposition the celica a little closer to the integra. They also reduced engine capacity to a level closer to the teg.

Toyota probably made the new corolla a little heavier (ie couple of extra cup holders and a and a few lead weights) and the new celica a little lighter to stop new celica owners from getting upset. Cuz If I bought a sports car and the little medium family car was quicker I would be upset.
Oh yeah those figures are probably pretty close and I doubt it would be a full second difference between the corolla and the integra.
But I guess we will see in time to come.
I still think they are detuned!

i know someone who has converted a 1zz to rwd to use in a clubbie. 2zz should be the same setup (w55 box) the 2zz is a dimensionally bigger motor though, so you'd have to watch the height.
will have to modify the sump too
there is a american site that has all the sae docs on the 1zz & 2zz. e-mail me & i'll send you a link
gen4 beams motr supposedly makes 195-215 jap hp (depending on the car & spec) in reality thy make about 175-185 australian hp
