when i try to play an avi file on my computer, it only plays the sound, no vision, and it tells me there was an error downloading a codec, but it doesnt say which codec. i looked around the microsoft website, on the media player site, but couldnt find an appropriate codec. does anyone know what will fix it?
thanks
Will

Down load a program called Gspot. It will tell what codec you will need.

Get that Gspot program Ed, it will tell you what codecs you need and if you have them installed or not.

well, downloaded gspot, and i was missing some codecs... so i went fishing and downloaded them all, but i cant seem to get divx to play the damn things still...
one did open in winamp (which it didnt previously), but the colours were all screwy.
and yet... these were all the time playable in avi preview... go figure...

Yeah it takes a bit of playing around. Sometimes when you have a few different codec packages installed they cause problems with each other.
