Hey guys,
I had fouled spark plugs so I bought a new set. I found out later that I'd bought the wrong heat range. 5 instead of 6. Anyway, they've fouled up. I suspect that it happened after the couple of hot days that we had a little while ago. The temps were in the mid 30s I think and I was thrashing the car around. It got pretty damn hot... Could it be the combination of wrong heat range and my notoriously overheating engine?

Or could it be the oxy sensor?

[Edit: Me kant speel]

having the colder heat range (5) means the plug wont get hot enough to burn off the slugde it collects - and they foul... this may have caused the problem you describe with the plugs you just put in...

Kewlies. Good to hear. I just wanted to know before I put a new set of spark plugs in... It's a huge PITA to change spark plugs for me.

5's are hotter than 6's.. higher number = colder (for NGK anyways) Wink

SoooOOoo.... My oxy sensor then? Or anything else that could be the cause?

I thought the oxy sensors only worked when under low load, eg cruising?

Hmm... I dunno...

I just figured that the oxysensor is the most likely cause of over fueling... Could be the AFM (unlikely) or not getting enough wattage to the ECU/injectors (quite likely although it's only just started happening).

Was it just 1 or 2 plugs?? or all 6 of them??
Do they all look the same (colour, deposits etc...), just thinking it could be leaky valve guide seals fouling the plugs.

I'll take some photos and post them up tomorrow.

I'm just gonna install the new ones anyway. The car is an absolute POS to drive right now.
I just wish half the engine didn't have to come out every time I changed the spark plugs... Stupid duck pond sitting on top of my engine. Disgusted

Dunno... When it's that cold, I'm not gonna hang around outside for long...... Smile

Changed the spark plugs but I left my digicam at home. I'll go grab it at lunch time and post the photos up.

They're NGK BCPR6EY-11s. Although I accidentally bought BCPR5EY-11s which fouled really quickly.

I got bcpr7es and I never seen a rough idle like that it was all over the place, then I use the ngk recommended platinum BCPR6EP-N-8 and its great

In my old Yamaha Motorbike it use to eat NGK plugs for breakfast, literally, start it up to go to work and it would run on 3 at least once a month. Changed to ND (nippon denso) plugs and it was alot better (once every 2 months!!).
Leaky valve guide seals was the source of the problem, didn't feel like pulling the engine out back then to fix them so I sold it with a new set of plugs!!

It is funny because I have seen a few older 4AGE's with leaky valve guides, both use yamaha heads!!!
Is there something wrong with the design or durability of them??
ed_ma61: you've had plently of yamaha heads apart!?!?!

ps. It is odd that it fouled the hotter plugs quicker, my old 1275GT mini use to run with 2 BP4ES & 2 BP6ES, bloodly cracked rings!!
