Well fuel economy was never real good in the first place!,but 20L/100k`s is terrible.....
What condition is your engine in?
Had the injectors cleaned lately?
Is it in a good state of tune?

...and put the tank on a weight reduction program?
seriously, that's worse than my way-out-of-tune 18R turbo. when 's last time it had a good tune/clean up?

Yeah time for a tune-up dude. 5M-E's are heavy on the fuel but not that heavy.

17L/100km is still bad
my 6MGE with a 4.1 diff can get about 9L/100km on a country run, and thats a W57
I know the 5ME is worse, but not that bad
you should be getting about 12L/100km hiway, and at absolute worst 15L/100km city

Go to Jaycar, get a air/fuel mixture meter (unless you can find one somewhere else, put in an o2 sensor and see how rich you are running.
Check for leaks in the intake piping, see how dirty your air filter is, check you plugs/leads.
If you are down on power, you will tend to have a heavier foot, ad hence use more fuel

My economy is crazy at the moment, last two tanks I got just over 9k / L (cheering!), the first tank was about 1/2 highway / city. The second tank was about 1/6th highway / the rest city (was soooo happy with that).
But this tank even tho my driving style hasn't changed much / if at all, and I'm looking to get about 7k / L off of this tank
Btw before you all go and get angry at my good economy, the engine has only done about 20 000k since i rebuilt it
Cheers

get injectors professionally cleaned
replace or clean (if re-usable type) air cleaner
replace plugs
replace plug leads
set IGN timing to factory settings
get mech/EFI-mech to check that AFM is working correctly
get mech/EFI-mech to check that TPS is positioned correctly
replace oil & oil filter
if automatic, get gearbox serviced
check tyres at correct pressure
check brakes not dragging
checl wheel bearings are quiet/ not dragging
...
enough to keep you busy for your holiday?

That is not bad... I have had my 5M-E engine head reconditioned and still looking for enhancing my economy... I have learnt to drive sensable and not heavy footed.
I have replaced everything and even running an original Toyota air filter (yep ~ Took K&N out as it guzzled more fuel for my driving)
You just have to see if the exhaust to see if there is sufficent flow but not too much flow (don't know if it has to do with anything )
Currently I averaging around 12-15L per hundred including mostly City driving...
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

look at an LPG closed loop controler and see if you can set it up to bypass air around the AFM to give the ol' 5m leaner runing on the hi-way/cruise

shite..
i've just realised how much of a problem i have.. cos this is nothing compared to how much fuel i use.. mine takes about 6 litres for every 10 km--and its just a mainly stocky 4ag. i knew its running too rich, but if you guys are saying that 20litres per 100km is bad then 60 litres per 100km in a 1.6 4cyl is f*cken apalling!!!
does anyone know if theres a lean-rich adjustment screw on the 4ag? please help--im having to mortgage my left testicle just to get around!
soz dude, i didnt mean to hijack your thread so if anyone can help me out could you please please please pm me with any advice?

Take your car to a Gas Research place or a good Dyno place. It may be that the jets in the carby and needs a reco.
My SA63 (2S-C) was doing 15L per hundred until we did the heads (Oil Stems) and the carby reco, now she does 9L per hundred [And Gas Research].
See how you go.
Cheers.

He'd running a 4AG, so no carbies.
Also, if the catalytic converter is blocked your car will use a huuuuge amount of fuel
Drop into a zorst shop and have them check that

Just to put that in perspective, the Toyota GT-one Le Mans car used about 50l/100km under full racing conditions and that had 400kw+

you should count your self lucky
try having a 4m with a 350 holley
it sux's the juice it cost me $10 a day to get to work and back
but thats probably because i have my foot flat for half of it
but it should be better when i get the a/f ratio right all you can smell is fuel coming out the exaust.

thanks for all the advice guys.. keep it coming! shite--i wish i'd checked the cat-i replaced a threaded bolt on it the other day when i was bored.
and zzt231--i did have a 4ac hatch for a bit, but that was a long way back. yeah ive got a 4ag now...but at the rate i'm going i'll probably have to sell it cos i cant afford the fuel!
i know the car's running really really rich.. is there a way that i could lean it out? is there some sort of adjustment mechanism to do this on an efi motor? i know that it's possible to do on a carby or otherwise, does anyone have any ideas as to why it could be running so rich??
thanks again for all your help guys---oh and merry christmas

Lose the LRP dude its crap use PULP, and also see about winding up the advance on the dizzy a few degrees (listen for pinging then back it off a little) you may get even better mileage!
