Altezza 3SGE into Sprinter nearly finished. Thu, 08 January 2004 14:17 Go to next message
Here's a couple of pics, taken yesterday.
The engine bay is basically all done now, with just a couple of minor things to finish up.

http://www.billzilla.org/ae863sgebay3.jpg

We were going to fit buttons to the existing AE-82 steering wheel I had in the car, but as it turned out the Altezza SXE-10 / RS200 one bolts straight on, so that's what it now has. (minus the airbag!)

http://www.billzilla.org/ae86newpanel.jpg

I gave the car a fifteen minute odd drive today and it's not too bad, though still needs a little fiddling to get it all right. The water temp behaves very well, but the engine has a few rough spots that we think we know the cause of. There's a slight lump to the idle, we're not sure if it's supposed to have that or not.
One of the problems is the fuel pressure, as we're just not sure what it's supposed to be. (The Altezza's have the FPR in the tank, not on the fuel rail)
It seems to run okay with 60psi, but we're still trying different settings.
The HID headlight work just fine, though I haven't tried them at night yet.
The radiator is a custom made unit from a local company, as is most of the rest of the water cooling gear from their off the shelf gadgets.
The EFI computer sits in that black box on the FL of the engine bay, and it's all been modified so that most of the relays sit in there out of the way.
The battery is one of those compact Odessy types, and it sits right under the inlet manifold.
The brakes are very bad at the moment, it just won't stop very well at all so we have to try some smaller master cylinders.
The dashboard is nearly done, and we can't get the Altezza fuel gauge working so we're sticking in the AE-86 one to the side of the Altezza panel. (The fuel sender goes to the bodywork computer, which then sends a multiplex signal to the panel. All too hard!!)
The speedo is also a little tricky, as the Altezza's use the ABS sensor from one front wheel to feed a signal to the ABS computer, which then sends a signal to the panel. We're working on how to get one of the ABS sensors working with one of the front wheels ....
So for the moment, my car has gone from about 340,000km odd down to 12,607km, and is there to stay for a while. Smile
And oh yeah, I have to get on the lathe and make up a shifter knob. Wink

It's got Cusco front suspension all through it, with Cashiew struts - All from Japan from when I used to fly there often.
I run about 3deg neg castor and about 1deg neg camber.

Shocked looks fantastic wish I had the money to buy a front cut and do that to the old sprinter Crying or Very Sad Crying or Very Sad

Bill have you thought about getting a Programmable Integrated controller (PIC) chip done to control the dash, simple program with Analogue to Digital convert chip for fuel sender and pulse counter from the ABS sensor.
Confused

Hi Bill,

Your Sprinter is looking totally awesome, so far!
The Altezza chronograph speedo looks totally sweet, and matched with the updated shifter, looks really retro-tech Very Happy
I hope you iron out the 3s-gte bugs, coz I think it will be one of the best sprinters on the road when its done Very Happy

Great to see some thinking outside the square Bill. Well Done!

With the Fuel gauge, when I did a dash conversion once we retrofitted the "back" of the gauge to a newer dash? Is that possible, to modify the rear of the 86 gauge and fit it into the altez. dash facia?

Possible solution to your speedo dilemma.
Go to an aftermarket cruise control specialist.
They usually have bits & pieces to fit sensors to cars (usually on tailshafts/driveshafts) that run a mechanical speedo rather than an electronic one.
They have adaptors that fit into the gearbox where your speedo cable goes in.
Or Fit something to your tailshaft.
Then feed that signal to whatever you need.

I think the MX83 Cressidas had a factory sensor on their tailshaft for the ABS

KOFFEE-BLACK - Yes, it's the stock Altezza 5-speed automatic gearbox.
Jase - The original AE-86 fuel gauge is now sitting up in the top-right corner of the spare space of the instrument panel. Just gotta get a light onto it now.
AE95 - It works like a regular slushbox or a Tiptronic, depends where you have the selector.
Crostek - Not sure, it may not be that simple with the way the panel & ECU(s) work. It's all pretty weird and the electronics guy is very darn clever ...
wagonist - We know how to make it work, we just have to work out where to put the sensor.

i love this engine
if i had 10k i would do this exact engine mod and get the trd gauges and a h-plate shifter and an aftermarket ECU and some BIG brakes and a set of BIG BALLS to drive it

nice work bill, any reference material of other cars with the conversion?

Ahhhh, awesome. I was going to do this conversion, until a *certain nameless* wrecker *lost* my engine. I often wondered how it would have been if I'd gone that way, and it's great to see some happy snaps of your attempt. Top effort!

ae86drift - There's at least a few other cars around the world that also have the blacktop 3SGE's, though I haven't heard of anyone anywhere that kept the automatic box behind them.
FWIW we didn't get the master cylinder size right the first time, so that big brake conversion that was going to wait is now going to start on Tuesday. So at the worst case we only have to do a cylinder change once for the fronts.

Hey Bill a while ago you mentioned that you wanted to use some spacers between your crossmember and chassis. Did you end up doing this and if so what RCA's did you end up using?

Cool1 - Yes, it's got 10mm spacers between the crossmember & chassis rails. The RCA's are the ones that have been in it for years, about 300mm thick i think.

StuC - No, it's out of an RS200 Altezza. About 195hp I think, and they use a hot-wire AFM, which you can just see in the inlet pipe next to the RH headlight.
