AE86 conversion question Thu, 15 January 2004 06:00 Go to next message
Just wondering what is the most cost effective converstion to be done to a AE86 inh you guys' opinion? 4AGE? 4AGZE? 20 valve? even Silvia turbo???

I'm not just talking about power.. but with the money I have to spend on a conversion and all other parts that need to be changed for that conversion... which is the most worthwhile?

How much money are we looking at and what parts are needed to do that conversion?

Cheers

Go the simple 86kW bigport conversion. All others require more work. The additional power of a 20V isn't IMHO worth the effort.

having recently done my 4age conversion, i'd say that this would be the most cost effective.. although i must say that you should expect to spend at least 2k.
here's a rundown of my costs:
engine $700
flywheel $70 (missing from engine package)
hd clutch kit $250
extractors $300
exhaust $500
muffler $400
2 fuel pumps $200
surge tank $100
intake $100
throttle cable $30
misc costs (oil/plugs/hoses..etc) about 200?
wiring $300

..and i'm sure i've missed a few things.

i'd say you're better off spending a bit more money and research and drop an sr20det in there.. but thats my opinion as i get beaten by hondas.

For starters, 20V and 4AGZE feel completely different. 4AGZE has shitloads of torque from the word go, 20V comes into its own above 5k rpm. Both are still comfortable on the street.

I'd budget $4000 -> $6000 for each of these.

Another option you have is the Jap-spec 4AGE (RWD redtop). I think pretty hard to come by.

<- Check out the articles to the left and also 4age.net.

Help shouldn't be hard to find, lots of these conversions done.

First up, i'd prefer an AE101 half cut due to the additional power, but it's not that important.

the only reason they are quoted more power from factory over the ae92 is because they came standard with a better exhaust system

Also, mostly ae92s though:

Different prices between companies
Different levels of service
Different quality
Warrenties
4AGZE more popular than before
Lots of reasons.

ae101 also has forged and lightened conrods. so they'd make a tiny bit extra power there too.
