AUTO TRANS Question Sat, 10 August 2002 08:38 Go to next message
Hey all,

My current Automatic Transmission shifts rather quickly and violently from 1st to 2nd, no matter what the acceleration is...

I have noticed that once warmed up, the shift is much less violent...

What could be the cause of this, and is it a cheap fix?

Thanks in Advance.

It has been this way since I got it from my mechanic's... It is a used transmission, the old one died. The fluid is new, still red-pink colour. The level appears to be a over full...

Could this have anything to do with it?

if its only a little over full then i wouldn't worry about it but if its heaps over full i would but i think the best bet would be to go back to the mechanic and tell them your problem as auto gear boxes are pretty complex and i don't underdstand how they work exactly

Try re-doing the fluid. Too much can be just as bad as not enough.

You (he) could check the adjustment of the throttle cable.
Try loosening it. They can sometimes get pulled slightly out of the transmission on the way from the wreckers to the shop.

Is your fast idle (cold) speed correct?

Everything else about the trans seems cool. The convertor locks up after 3rd gear and engages/disengages fine, though sometimes quite jerkily...

I am concerned of the roughness of the 1st to 2nd change, and that my engine mounts will over time weaken to the point of needing replacement.

So did you drain and re-do the fluid?

Getting a 4 litre tin of fluid and a new plug gasket should be <$30 from toyota.

But really, take it back to the mechanic and get him to fix it. If he wants to charge you, find a new mechanic.

I'd say ditch the mechanic and go see an auto specialist, most mechanix don't know that much about auto's and won't be able to diagnose it as accurately.
