jaycar shift light kit - which wire do i use !! Fri, 23 January 2004 11:50 Go to next message
ok, perhaps not so much 'which wire' but "which input type" (as you have to build the circuit differently depending on what kind of rpm input signal you plan to utilise).

i want to use the -ve signal off the coil as my rpm signal::

i have the choice of:

A "reluctor"
B "points, coil, or hall input"
C "low voltage input"

now i know the obvious choice is option B: coil... but my ignorance to wtf a reluctor distributor is baffles me

please someone solve my mystery of the evening, and put me out of my electronics ignorance...

Definition:-

reluctor - to struggle against, resist.

heres a pic http://www.msdignition.com/dist_73.htm

All I can tell you is it seems to be the thingy inside elec dizzy triggering coil firing (like dist cam)

Just use the damn coil like everyone else. Evil or Very Mad

if u r runnin an ignitor

best thing is to tap of the black wire

this black wire also is the ig- wire in the diagnostic plug

it is a low voltage output
so i would asume to use low voltage input on the shift light thingy (c)

if u go off the coil try (b)

Reluctors are commonly used on 2-strokes motorbike and lawn-mower engines.

A big magnet flys past a rather large wire coil.
The coil then generates enough voltage to fire the spark plug directly.

ok, this just suddenly got a WHOLE lot more confsing than i anticipated...

i have a reluctor, 3 infact, inside the dizzy
i have a single ignition coil
i also have (i assume) a low voltage signal kickin around in the diag box...

which to use??

can i just splice into the ecu plug loom... and if i did, which one would i choose, and what kind of signal would it be?

http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/loats/toymods/7mgeECUpinout.jpg

otherwise, options?
you gotta spell it out for me here, im not bright Rolling Eyes

thanks

ok, i probably dont have a reluctor as such in the dizzy then?
more like 3 induction coils for cam position?

still none the wiser here Laughing

none of them

just find the ig- wire and trace it into the cabin

should be in a plug near the ecu just behind hte glovebox

thats the same ig- wire as found in the diag box in the bay?

and you reckon thats a low voltage signal?

thanks mate

i really should learn something about engine lectrical systems one day.

and if i do decide to just take the signal straight off the coil, thats literally hooking a wire straight up to the -ve on the coil terminal? yeah?

damn i feel stupid sometimes

just run the shift light off your underbody neons or your LED illuminated chrome TRD stickers

fully wicked and sick mayte, you will be pulling all the chicks

hehehah ha ha.... not Rolling Eyes

im using it as a three stage rpm switch for a progressive methanol injection system if you must know

ed: are u using methanol/ethanol injectors? or brass fittings with a reducer to form a nozzle?
and if injectors, how are you keeping the fluid under pressure?
and if you're going three stage, are you ramping up pressure? or increasing number of active outlets?

im using:

- 45psi auto-regulated shurflo diaphram pump (2.8 Gal/min i think)
- pressure reservoir
- 12v inline solenoid valve
- and intially one, then perhaps 2 or even 3 individual misting jets.

each of these jets will need their own solenid valve to be switched by the rpm kit at the decided stage.

the jets themselve have a fixed flow rate for a given psi (in my case 45psi) and several are available covering the flow ranges i need to maintain about 5% water to fuel mix. i can also swap in different sized jets according to how the engine responds. i may require larger or smaller jets at diffent rpm bands alos, so we'll see. ill start with one small one comming on at 3.3k rpm for the duration of the rpm rang, and see what happens Nod

im getting these jets:

http://www.bete.com/products/pages/pj.htm

through these guys:

http://www.spraynozzle.com.au/

from what i can tell, these are FAR better than the jets available from erl/aquamist etc (much finer droplet size ~50micron). available in brass or stainless, and are about $30-35 each

could you tell us more about this shift light kit?? Is it just a small L.E.D. that you put in your instrument cluster??
How much does it go for?

has 3 LEDs which you can mount wherever you like. each LED can be set to come on at any rpm point, and is fully adjustable. you can use the outputs to the LEDS to trigger anything really, from a full-sik 2" wide spotlight shiftlight, to the more mundane N20 solenoid etc...

check http://www.jaycar.com.au

costs like $35

Ed, most toyota electronic dizzys have reluctors.. you probably do have a few in there.. the 4AGe's i've seen have 2 reluctors, one for crank/cam position, and one for "speed sensing" (i think for the 'VAST' system?)

'low voltage input' is what your ECU sends to the ignitor if it is ECU controlled.
as long as the shift light has high enough.. something.. not to interfere, all will be good.

otherwise, use the coil.

i would not want to add somethign between the reluctor and ignitor/ECU, the signal is already low enough as it is..
at least with coil, it's hard to stuff up any signals/operation.

build it to B specs and run a signal off the -ve side of the coil. unless you have a tacho in the car allready then it would be better to tap off the back of the cluster.

ignore the reluctor and igniter, not all igniters have a tacho output and even those that have the pin for it dont always have a wire output, the reluctor setup theyre referring to in the notes is more toward an aftermarket ecu setup.

thanks to the boys in the last two posts Very Happy

dumbed it right down to my level with 'insert tab A in slop B' directions.... cheers to you both!

looks like ill just being using the coil terminal then.

goddamn this got all out of hand quickly... its just ONE WIRE ffs!!

http://members.reynolds.net.au/~poulose/misc/reluctor_dizzy.jpg

This is a picture of reluctor ignition for a eight cylinder, it can not fire the plugs directly, it is used to trigger a ignition module which then controls the coil/sparks.

Reluctor is reference to its magnetic operation (reluctance is the opposition of magnetic flux, akin to electrical resistance)

Since the metal has a lower reluctance then air, when the teeth line up the magnetic flux increases which in turn causes a small voltage spike to occur across the two terminals that can be seen in the photo, the ignition module detects this spike and disrupts the primary current flow, thus inducing the secondary voltage to fire the plugs.

Its very common in OEM applications due to its simplicity (also since its basically maintenance free since no parts are in contact)

Hope that clears that up
