Auto to manual conversion Sun, 08 February 2004 11:21 Go to next message
Im looking at buying a car but there is something I hate about it, ITS A BLOODY AUTO. I hate auto cars. Anyway, its a 4AFE engine and im wondering what it will cost to get it converted to manual.

What will be needed and what will it roughly cost to get done by a professional???

You should be able to find a manual AE92 without TOO much stress, otherwise you'll just have to hit a wrecker, add up the cost of all the parts, and then add a few hundred bucks to get the job done. Probably a bit overcapitalistic on a 4AF AE92...

If you don't want an auto car, don't buy an auto car. Pretty bloody obvious I would have thought?

It depends, if everything about the car is as you want, then get it, convert later.
ie, if its the only one you've seen in that colour in that condition, then get it
Its easier to change a box than the colour of the paint/interior

I would agree if we were talking about something rare and desirable (eg it's hard to find a manual turbo Soarer), but this is a Corolla FFS! It can't take that long to find a manual Corolla in good condition.

This is coming from a man who has swapped far too many transmissions in this life. It's something best avoided if at all possible!

Aha, the exact reason I'm converting mine. Couldn't find a decent manual Soarer in 5 months of looking, so after 2.5 years of owning the car, I'm finally converting to manual this week Smile
Added bonus is that I bought the newest auto Soarer I could find at the time (1995 model) so having a M/T version of a newer Soarer will make it all the more rarer.
Hopefully I'll have some good news after the weekend.

I'm in the same club as Soarer.

I've had my Supra for over 2 years now and have done a whole lot of work on it to make it one of THE best supra's in Perth (no exaggeration!). Except for the fact that it's an Auto... Until now... The car is currently up on blocks with no gearbox in it at all - *waits for clutch man to finish*

However, this is the only reason I would do it - i.e. I love my car and couldn't bare to part with it to find a manual version.

If I was starting over, I would find a manual car of the one I want ... because it's a good way to save 4grand Smile

Really what it comes down to is... Do you think it's worth the effort to convert this car, or are you prepared to wait and find a manual variant ?

This is a car that doesnt come up to often at all really and everything is exactly how I want it to be. I would love to look for a manual but this particular car is just to good to look past.

Chances are I will just get the car, drive it for a year or so, buy a manual and swap everything over.

What's so special about it that it doesn't come up that often? It IS a Corolla, they ain't exactly uncommon, manual or auto, in good condition or bad... Confused

Unless it's UH OH which would explain its uniqueness...

I love my AE92 secas and had every intention of modifying a sx seca but when I saw this car back up for sale and for that price, I just couldnt look past it. Its just a beautiful car with so much work and money put into it.

looks like alot of work has gone into UH OH....but it gives me a headache looking at the photos :/
Kind of sickening, but if it rocks your world
then i dont think it would be too hard to find a wrecked corolla with the required parts.

when i was at the wreckers today getting a new spare tyre i saw a couple in the yard whilst i was waiting for the guy to get around to putting my new purchase on its rim(he was having issues believing that a 245 could fit on a 7inch rim...even after i showed him the 265's on my rears...same rims)
